I’m just visiting Elkader from New York with my girlfriend whose family is from here and who knows the town well. I ordered a chocolate chip cookie and when I handed over a $5 to the cashier my girlfriend whispered kind of urgently, “don’t you have anything smaller?” In my head I thought, well no but why should I? It will probably cost $2 - $2.50 or so right? The cashier took the bill, picked through the register, neatly stacked the bills and politely handed me my change: “Your total is fifty cents, your change is $4.50.” Ah, thats why!

Nothing fancy. Baked there by hard-working ppl who know how to bake! They get there in the weee hours of the morning to bake there and greet you politely without gushing out a canned corporate-required fake greeting!How can anybody give this less than 5 stars? They have changed the fillings and frosting and more jelly than jam. Dont get me wrong its still very good, just not as great. If you are in Elkader it is a must and potato rolls will always be ordered...
