The Nostalgia:
The service is reminiscent of that infamous “Seinfeld” scene- No Soup For You!
When you enter this restaurant/convenience shop/house of worship/department store- you’re in for quite the treat. I mean, where else can you purchase a comforter set with your beef patties and receive complementary side eyes.
The experience:
No greetings and it’s in your best interest to know your order as you quietly stand in line pondering the type of zoning permit issued.
The restaurant employees are visibly working extremely hard in preparing authentic homemade dishes. I can appreciate the focus, but fostering an enjoyable customer experience only takes a simple acknowledgment of life- Vis-à-vis “hello, welcome to Sr Marie” or “hello, we will be with you shortly”.
The Savior:
The food was absolutely delicious! The black rice was texturally cooked to perfection; it paired perfectly with the tomato forward sauce that had a welcomed heat. The oxtails were very tender, packed with flavor, and were not outshined by the sauce.
I enjoyed being able to differentiate the flavor profiles. Fried plantain were as expected. Griot was tender and flavored to the bone. Pikliz was lacking that signature immediate heat, but the flavor and crunch was nice.
Packaging was perfect! Having the stew in the separate sealed container is thoughtful as it transported nicely.
Excellent value for the price, taste, and portions.
The opportunity:
The customer service needs significant improvement, and the waiting area needs to be decluttered and organized.
Nonetheless, when you have the flavor to compensate for your sass- people just may...
Read moreWalking in, the restaurant looks exceptionally slovenly. There is no order, rhyme, or reason. It look slapped together in a haste without a twinge of care for appearance. It is not pleasant at all. There’s posters from 2022, if they can’t pay attention to that detail imagine what level of care is devoted to food handling and preparation. Moving on the menu doesn’t have prices on it and on the receipt items are listed as “custom item” and priced arbitrarily. I felt fleeced! In the end I payed $71 for 2 plates of food 2 drinks a bag of dinner rolls and some biscuits. I then tipped 20% even tho the staff was remarkably rude and quite disheveled. It was appalling. No “thank you” or any appreciation. in fact, it felt like I was inconveniencing them. The food was good but not enough to make up for the egregious experience. I Will not return and wouldn’t recommend. If you don’t care about looks, don’t mind bad service, and are okay with over paying then sure go for it. Otherwise...
Read moreI wanted a balanced home cooked meal that I didn't have to prepare myself. I had heard about Sr. Marie's and thought I'd give it a try. I ordered a take out meal consisting of fried chicken, coconut rice, and a salad. It was packaged nicely and the portions were hefty. My package included plantains, a bean gravy, and a spicy coleslaw garnish. Everything was delicious. The varied seasonings complemented each other. I have enough food left for another meal, too. The restaurant is already popular and, I believe, would do even more business if the site was larger and had a dining room with a setting that matches the Caribbean. Maybe, if they ever expand, they can have entertainment. This is the only "soul food" restaurant that I've heard about in the area. I was pleased. The price was reasonable especially considering that the menu choices top fast...
