Poor Landy’s! It has everything going for it but falls apart on execution.
We moved to the area in July ‘24 and were looking forward to Landys, then Milton hit, so we gave them a few months to rebuild, last night we finally stopped by, looking forward to a great birthday celebration….
Saturday night, 7:30, only a few cars in the parking lot - we were suspicious. At the hostess stand, nobody to be seen. After a few minutes I walked into the bar area to see a number of staff milling about, socializing with each other but no concern of anyone at the entrance. Finally after about 5 minutes we are greeted (warmly) and seated outside (per our preference) right on the water. Unfortunately, the fans on the patio weren’t running at all so the stagnant water smell filled the air. No problem - it’s June in swfl. We can manage. Our waitress, while kind mannered, interacted with us like she had 20 tables to serve. (There were a total of about 10 tables filled in the entire restaurant- and at least 4 servers). Live music was advertised but none to be found. When we asked we were told he cancelled due to an earlier storm. As such, no music playing at all outside, only the faint sounds of music over the speakers inside. Apps and drinks came out and were very nice. I’m not a slow eater, but halfway through a plate of wings and a cup of soup our full dinner was delivered. By then, the lack of fans and stagnant water had spurned the attack of mosquitoes. Halfway through dinner my wife couldn’t take being bitten any longer (even with bug spray on) and retreated to the car in the parking lot. I asked for to-go boxes which were delivered to the table by being placed on the plate of wings bones which had never been cleared. The bill was also delivered but I had to go inside after a number of minutes to find our waitress and pay the bill.
The food: Wings | the wings were great! Perfect size, perfect cook, great mango habanero sauce. BUT - please don’t serve wings on shredded lettuce. Now I either need to eat lettuce with my wings or pick it off the wings first. And please people - serve blue cheese or ranch with celery or carrots. At the risk of sounding snooty, these aren’t garnishes. The “proper” (here comes the snooty) way to eat wings is to enjoy the wings and sauce then dip carrots or celery in the ranch or BC to cool down the heat.
NE Clam Chowder | a bit runny for chowder, but it had nice flavor and presentation. I can even look past the dripped soup down the side of the cup … now that I mentioned it in my review. ;)
Béarnaise burger | amazing! Cooked as requested, bun toasted perfectly. All good. I had to try out the scalloped potatoes as a side and they tasted good, but presentation appeared to be cut from a larger serving tray and reheated. Maybe scoop to help make it feel like they were cooked on order.
Chicken Alfredo | probably the best I’ve come across so far in swfl. Linguini was perfectly done, sauce was superb and the ideal amount and chicken was good tasting and the ideal amount.
The main gripe with the food was just the timing of delivery. Pace the meal. Don’t start cooking the entrees at the same time you start cooking the apps. If it was crazy busy, I get it. But with the few active tops going last night, the timing should have been paced out better.
Overall, dinner was less than an hour. The patio was quite littered with prior diners droppings on the ground. And yet - the food was really good! And the establishment looked like Milton never happened.
We could tell significant time, effort and attention has been put into Landys. Unfortunately, lack of managerial oversight appears to be hamstringing a pleasant dining experience. Had the place been packed (in season) we could understand all of it. But - it was dead. Staff had plenty of time to look beyond just serving their tables and ensure all was in order, but that passion seems to be lacking. It’s a shame really, we wanted to like Landys and add it to the regular places we eat at, but the next trip there will be made with...
Read moreTo say the service we had was "bad"... we wanted to catch a sunset after a meal, and decided to get there and have a relatively quick bite. We chose to sit outside, and our server initially asked if we wanted to move to be warmer and turned the heaters on. Good start. Then he casually asked if we wanted to start with calamari (coincidentally, the most expensive app at $17, though everything was overpriced). We ordered mussels to split and a salad each (caesar, and a fruity one).
As we waited in this almost empty restaurant. And waited. We noticed he was talking to a girl at the bar for quite some time, and not checking on our very easy order, for about twenty minutes. When he finally went back he comes out to tell us he was sorry he forgot entering something into the system in the bar doesnt go to the kitchen. Umm, ok. He brings us cold bread to atone, and though I emphasized we were in a hurry he offered it to go which was absurd for our purposes.
Regardless, the salads then came out first which we had requested together. They were admittedly great. The mussels came about ten minutes later or so. They were awful. Together, we got through half of them. For them to even think of charging us full price, regardless of the quality and crazy price of food after that is deranged. But then he threw the bill on the table and walked away quickly, saying "i know you guys are in a hurry". And after voicing our displeasure multiple times, the FULL bill arrived.
So I went over to ask him about the bill, completely perplexed, and we told him the mussels were awful. He seemed annoyed and got a manager. They took a whopping 25% off the mussels only. I told him that was ridiculous for giving us terrible food, and screwing up the order multiple times. He looked at me and said "cash or charge, sir?" Dang. I needed a manager at that point.
Luckily, the manager was extremely nice, and apologetic, and removed the mussels from the bill. Apparently, during this exchange, my girlfriend heard him say loudly "if they're so bad, why are they gone?" Well, i did NOT hear this. I am very glad. And btw, we each ate a quarter of the bowl.
Despite the mussels, we would have returned....
Read moreLet me start this off by saying this is going to be quite the mixed reveiw.. Me and my boyfriend came here for dinner on a Wednesday night. The inside was pretty and the booths were very nice. It took around 10 minutes for a server to see us after we were sat. Our server honestly seemed like she'd rather be anywhere than at work that night and was not very welcoming. We got bread to start but it was 3 dollars, wich was a little odd considering even the olive garden gives you free bread. The bread was good but it only came with 3 peices, a container of cold hard butter, and no silverware to try and put butter. I ordered the crab cakes with scalloped potatoes, lemon caper sauce, and a side ceaser salad. The crab cakes and lemon sauce were fantastic. But to be frank, boxed scalloped potatoes would be MUCH better than theirs so I would not recommend them as a side. the ceaser salad was quite good and the croutons were especially good. Now here's when our expirence was bad.. My boyfriend ordered the burger and season fries. This came with coleslaw wich he was told he couldn't replace, even with an upcharge. He got served the wrong fries but just ate them anyways. They were pretty average. He opened his burger to find a very very soggy gross bun and a FRIED SHRIMP. I honestly don't know how that could've happened. The burger had crispy onions so perhaps in could have got mixed up the the fryer or something.. He hates seafood though so we asked to get it remade. After around 15 minutes of waiting it thankfully came with no fried shrimp this time and he said it was an average burger. We got the tirimisu for dessert, wich was great. When the check came I was shocked to see that the burger hadn't been taken off? I mean I understand if they accidentally put pickles or something on it but a freaking shrimp? I talked to a manager thankfully it was taken off. The manager was very nice. Overall, our expirence was not the best (especially my boyfriends) but we are willing to come back and try it again in the future as I can see...
