We swung into the drive-thru after midnight and were met with a column of cars waiting in line, a testament that we had just found the best place to eat late-night-ish in Fort Myers. The menu is way more straightforward than it initially appears to be, especially considering they really only have two different entrees, both of which are in the name of the joint, and minimal options of starches to accompany them in a finite number of combinations, all of which have been perfected by Hook’s over the period of time they’ve been slinging catfish and chicken wings to anyone smart enough and mildly intrepid enough to go there. And if you still can’t figure it out because it’s after midnight and your brain just doesn’t want to brain anymore, the absolutely freakin’ adorable teenagers in the kitchen will very politely and with focus help you make what is inevitably a good choice. We ordered a chicken and fish combo with fries and an extra order of chicken, corn nuggets and hush puppies. I got lemonade because it seemed like the thing to do. When we pulled up to get our food, I was glad I was restrained (seat belt!) lest I leap out of the car, climb through the drive through window and just hang out like a house cat while I gush about how freakin’ cute they are, a group of late 1970’s Mid-Western teenagers who had ridden their Schwinns through a wormhole in time and space to work the window and the fryer at Hook’s during the late rush and doing so with a confidence, humility and informed innocence that servers in Michelin-star restaurants wish they could fake. And they hooked us up on the condiments but not to the point where it was just wasteful, which also kinda impressed me, not gonna lie. I highly recommend you hook them up with a little tip on top of the bill. It initially seemed expensive for fast food and then I realized 1) Hook’s is NOT fast food and 2) inflation has also hit fast food joints and it’s actually the same price or more everywhere else. Plus they have really good hush puppies. And adorable employees that you need to tip and see what happens!! The food is totally worth it and it comes out fresh and hot and freakin’ delicious. I stuck to the fish because I have an aversion to chicken but I was told the chicken was solid. The corn nuggets are nicely bite-sized little chunks of fried cream corn or some such thing, presumably using sorcery of some kind to hold it all together. You’re dumb if you don’t get hush puppies. Don’t be dumb. They’re excellent and I feel like chipotle mayo/aioli is fantastic with them, in case you were wondering. If you’re not already on your way there, then I don’t know what’s holding you back unless it’s possibly because of the neighborhood. If that’s what is preventing you from some of the best late-night drive-thru food you’re likely ever going to have (I’ve done my share of the late-night drive-thru spots all over the world and I’m saying this is one of the best. go there.), then you’re gonna miss out on a whole lotta cool food and other fun stuff. Order one of everything and tip the kids in...
Read moreUPDATE: the manager at this location was COMPLETELY useless when I called to express my dissatisfaction from a take out order I had the other night. To him complaints must be made immediately, apparently. He thought I would still have the food almost 2 days later. Really? Stupid question dude. I was in the hospital is why I didn't call immediately but he wasn't willing to hear me out. Clearly he was not interested in providing good customer service. He was more interested in interrogating me like I'm lying and trying to pull a fast one to get free food because me contacting him didn't happen in his "timeframe." I'm so sorry. NOT! It's highly insulating to treat customers that way especially when the food here is pretty damn expensive to begin with, even though it's in the hood and the clientele there are very scary. I definitely will not be going back and spending almost $30 on 1 meal after this dismissive treatment. They only give 1 half filled tiny container of cocktail sauce for 10 shrimp. Seriously! And their conch was very chewy and overcooked this last time. This was my first review before this incident.... Well even though it's basically in the ghetto on MLK, don't go late at night, it does have really great food. The wings, shrimp, conch and coleslaw were deelish. The grouper was basically bland. However, they did want to charge a $1 for each small ranch dip cup. I didn't know ranch dressing was so expensive that they are trying to charge for it. But then they give you a bunch of sauces with your meal that you didn't even ask for versus asking what you need because I would have needed ranch for my fries. The prices are kinda high but what isn't these days? However they do give good sized portions of everything. I'll certainly go back. It...
Read moreI went to hooks with a coworker yesterday because I heard good things about their food. We got there and found that the parking lot was full and two small. The good news is they have a drive-thru so we got in line. when we got to the speaker where we order their speaker had very very little volume and we had to keep asking the individual inside to please repeat what she said. Well we finally got our food ordered and made it to the window and we set at the window for 35 minutes. All we ordered was grouper and chicken with two sweet teas. After waiting their the first 10 minutes they came and asked us to remind them of our order which we did. 10 minutes later they asked us to remind them of our order again which we did. At this point we would have drove away but they already charged our debit card. We sat there for a full 35 minutes waiting and they never gave us our drinks. Even McDonald's is smart enough to hand you a drink so that you have something during your waite. There were three ladies behind the window one of them never said a word and two of them spoke unprofessional and ghetto as hell. We finally got our food and drove away. In the end the food was only ok and the portion was large. But my coworker and I agree that we will never ever go back and we will never recommend this...
