Current status - slightly high prices but wonderful food! Worth giving a try, hopefully soon to be back to "neighborhood's best place to eat."
This is an edited review: I left my original below (2 stars) so you can see my complaints from two weeks ago, and how the new owners are addressing them.
First of all, I went in today to give them another chance. They are consolidating the formerly HUGE menu down to something that doesn't require the massive stock (and waste!) to get prices under control. I spoke to the owner about the pricing - there was one item in my normal meal that has gone up a LOT, which is why I saw the 55% increase - a 140% increase in the cost of something will do that! Most increases going by the menu are much more in line with our "normal" (face_palm) current inflation rate, which you can't fault them for. There are a lot of improvements and changes underway, and the transition period is obviously rough, but they're working on it and actually care about the customers.
The cook in there today (and hopefully forever!) did a WONDERFUL job on the Mexican Omelette I ordered. So the (temporary) drop in food quality wasn't cost cutting on supplies, but a training or staffing issue. They also had a new cashier, and while obviously not completely familiar with everything YET, seemed sharp and did her best to be helpful.
Overall, four stars at the moment, but working hard to get to five. Go give them a chance! I'm glad I gave them another try myself, and I'll be going back regularly.
--- original review -- I've been eating here 3 or 4 times a week since about 2013, through two previous owners. The newest owners have DRASTICALLY increased prices - my normal $7.99 lunch is now $12.38 before drink, tax, etc.! That's a 55% increase! I realize inflation is bad, but that's ridiculous. I can no longer afford to eat here!
Food quality has also gone downhill. Some items are fine, almost as good as before, but other items you have to wonder if the cook even knows what it's SUPPOSED to look like/contain or how it should be fixed. DON'T order the Texas Tuna Melt. It doesn't even resemble one.
But they have a nice pretty new electronic menu and fancy...
Read moreDoorDash order - not comparable to eating at location. New to Haltom City and enjoying exploring all of the food options. Ordered from Famous George's after thinking about a Denny's Lumberjack Slam all morning, but deciding to look for a less... "Denny's" type of spot. I got breakfast platter #1 w/ added order of extra hashbrowns and ham (and a lunch Bacon cheee Burger for later ;]. haven't tried the burger yet, but it looks alright and tasty.)
Pros: °I appreciate that I don't have to choose between Sausage or bacon, you just get both. °Portions of each component are a bit small on their own, compared to Denny's at least - but there is so much food in general that I actually like the portions here a lot. It's not too much food, just enough of each item to feel full and satisfied.. Except the Hashbrowns, Im very glad I got an extra order, I need more than what the single portion offers, my dudes. °The sausage patties are pretty dang good for my tastes too. Their texture is somehow different than I'm used to, in a way I can't explain, but I really like it. °Bacon was very good and cooked perfectly for what I like. °The pancakes weren't ridiculously huge and had really nice flavor. I appreciate the balance of not having to choose between finishing my pancakes, or everything else.
Cons: °I had ordered a Biscuit and Gravy side with my platter #1, but it was left out of the order once delivered. No big deal - unless items are missing in future orders too. Plus Doordash is really excellent at refunding missing items. °Hashbrowns were a bit undercooked - and not in the "you ordered Doordash, of course they're sogg, you knob" kind of way. They just generally could have used more time and browning. They were still very tasty, but Im also a crack-head for potatos, so Im not super picky there.
In summary - I don't have much bad to say at all, but a lot of good. I'll order from here again, for sure. The menu is sizable and there are a lot more items I want to try. If you want a tasty, filling breakfast for a pretty reasonable price, I'd give Famous...
Read moreI love diners and little mom and pop shops. I feel as though you are welcomed there because they appreciate your business. That was not the case for me today. Went in around 11 (lunch time) and ordered the Philly cheese steak. The electronic sign was out of order but they had menus up front to still pick from. The cashier was confussed on what i asked for so i pointed it out on the menu.
I hear the gentleman in the kitchen cooking, dont want pre made food. So i figured it would take some time. 15 -20 min later my order is done. Cashier rings up a gyro, i mention i ordered the philly, and open the box. Not a philly, but a gyro, i showed the cashier what i pointed to and she keeps pointing at something else.
Its a small place so it was a bit hot inside, the floor was sticky from the laminate, i would assume. Black and white Frankenstein played on the tv. I only have so much time for lunch, so i just had to leave.
Maybe it was a bad day for them, but unfortunately, i wont be...
