So as always I preface this by saying I'm from Kansas City. You know, Texans, where REAL BBQ is from. I've lived in Fort Worth now for going on 2 years and have been to probably a dozen BBQ joints from DFW to Austin to Houston and have honestly tasted some of the worst or at best average BBQ I've ever had. I haven't tried one single place that I'd put on par with the most average KC BBQ joint and I'm being extremely honest. Your BBQ, by and large, is pretty plain.
That is, until now.
Today my wife and I tried Soulman's BBQ and finally... FINALLY I've found a place that I'd recommend down here and say it was at least as good as the average KC BBQ joint.
We had the chopped brisket, which was just outstanding. Very good ribs. And ham and chicken, which were both good as well. On top of that, their mashed potatoes were excellent as well... and I bring that up because mostly the sides I've had at just about every other BBQ place down here were pathetic. And I mean pathetic. Disgusting. These potatoes were just really, really good. Potato salad was good as well. Coleslaw was good. Fried Okra was good.
Honestly, we didn't have one thing here that we were disappointed with. Most of what we tried was at least average to good, with the brisket being the real champ. It was excellent, as I said.
Look, I make most of my own BBQ at home, which is every bit as good as anything I get going out... so it's not like I have to go out and get it. But sometimes I just want to see what's around and at last I've found a place that I'd be happy to go back to.
We did take out, so we didn't eat there, but the only thing I'd really mark down was that the place looked a little dated, but it's the taste that matters the most, so that's just a little thing.
If you haven't tried Soulman's, you're...

Ā Ā Ā Read moreI have followed soulmans on social media for a few years. Tonight, I was able to try the BBQ for the first time. I ordered take away. The man washing the windows was very friendly both coming and going. Ordering, the female cutting the meat took the opportunity to replenish all the meats: sausage, chicken, ribs, potatoes while I waited in line. I wasnāt in a hurry but no one else was able to serve until she finished and was ready to cut:serve my meal. She was polite but it was about 8-10 minutes. My meals: rib plate and 2 meat plate.sausage and brisket. Spicy sausage (hot link) had good spice. The brisket was sliced ultra thin. I didnāt weigh it but it seemed to be a really small portion. The 2 meat plate was the special so maybe the portion is smaller? Rib plate was 5 Carolina style ribs. They were tender and no sauce which is my preference. Sides: I was given 12 fries as a side. It was disappointing as they were in the fryer and dropped for 30 seconds as I watched . The portion size was minimal 12 fries..really?). Pinto beans were more of a bean soup. Beans and broth, no meat and just thin. Cole slaw was dry, again with not much flavor. Fried cabbage was good there is so much potential for the sides but for me, that fell short. I ordered take away there were no condiments other than sauce. Onions and jalapeƱos would have been nice. Spicy sauce had the āstraight out of the jarā flavor but want bad for a jarred sauce. I will try again in the future, but I would expect more for this to be regular on...
