Recently just ate here, the reasons for giving any stars is because the food was decent and the staff works extremely hard.
The other reasons for 2 stars is first, the menu was so overly complicated for a Sunday brunch that you would probably feel more comfortable having a legal team first interpret the rules on how and what to order here. Literally, every item has an asterisk next to you, and a different number of asterisks means different things that there is a key to help you understand it, like 2 means only certain substitutions, 3 means the price changes constantly, 1 is the standard warning about raw food. Like you can't order lunch till noon, which is fine, but you can't have a breakfast wrap because that is only available Monday to Saturday and not before 10 AM, Burgers are only available during certain days, they offer to allow for hashbrowns for an extra fee with omelets but it can only come IN the omelet and cannot be ordered on the side as that would be a substitution which is not allowed. The kids menu is presented as if all of the 5 items available is available all the time, even the description was "comes with egg, bacon or sausage with some in our table read as it comes with an egg with a choice of bacon or sausage but we were later told that it is either one of the three items. When you get to some items like a cheeseburger, they come with an asterisk stating not available on Sundays and holidays and not before noon but the top of the list it states available Monday to Saturday one corner then Available Sunday and Holidays on the other making it appear that all of the 5 items was available to order. Our child only wanted a cheeseburger but we were told it is too complicated for the kitchen staff to do burgers. Since when is a burger complicated? That is why there are literally millions of burger places because it is easy especially children's burgers. So the burger is too complicated on Sundays but a half rack of ribs is easy (Only available on Sundays and holidays after 12 noon)? I understand breakfast cafes limiting the menu for Sunday brunch. I have managed kitchens myself and have never seen such a complicated menu before today. My suggestion for this would be to separate the Sunday brunch menu into its own menu and have that given to the guests, it makes it easy for the wait staff who don't have to memorize the laws of King Street Cafe (Our waitress had to consult rules a few times during our ordering process) and it makes it easier for the guests who wouldn't be constantly told that they can't do certain things because rules and regulations set by the owners, even such easy things has having hash browns on the side instead of inside an omelet.
The other reasons for my review is because the place was really gross all around. The tables were sticky, the bathroom was unkempt, the windows were streaked and gross as you walk in, one window as covered with a tarp and duct tape. Lastly, I found a hair mixed into the corned beef hash that I ordered (that was allowed as an extra side for an extra fee of $6 to my breakfast but not hashbrowns). When looking into the kitchen on our way out I noticed several kitchen staff not wearing hats or anything to prevent this very thing from happening. I really hope they improve how the place operates and manage these issues that...
Read moreTL:DR; I'm really full, generally satisfied, and the people were nice. Competitively priced and good coffee.
I needed somewhere new to try in the area and I'd never been before. Driving up, they boast being the #1 breakfast in the country per person served. I have no idea what that meant but I chuckled.
Breakfast for one? Sure it's kinda quiet so have a table for 4. By the time I left, it wasn't quiet anymore. High ceilings and minimalist decor appealed to me straight away. Coffee, sir? ☕ Not bad at $2.59 and bottomless of course so I enjoyed 3 cups.
I ordered the King's Breakfast - the triple in my mind. Three eggs, three bacon, three sausage, three pancakes, home fries and two slices of toast. Let me break it down but overall I really enjoyed everything.
I ordered over medium eggs but got over easy. That's ok, they were eggs. Bacon was a little well done for me but I like it underdone so to most, it would be perfect. The sausage was from a box but it was tasty, nothing to write home about. The potatoes were lightly seasoned and salted - just enough to not taste like boiled then fried potatoes. The pancakes were enormous and lightly dusted with icing sugar - Aunt Jemima on the table in a squeezy bottle. Really good and sizable pumpernickel bread but lots of other options too.
What shocked me was how my breakfast came out in about 2 ½ minutes which means everything was just ready to be played in the back. It made me question its freshness but you know what, it all tasted good so maybe speed is the name of the game now. I can appreciate that if there's no sacrifice to quality.
A big breakfast and three cups of coffee for just over $20USD plus tax and tip is reasonable in 2024. Huge shout-out to Lisa D who kept the coffee coming and had a friendly smile and respectable distance otherwise. She's working her butt off for us and she deserves to know it's appreciated!
See you...
Read moreThis is a great local breakfast haunt. A large dining room with a fairly significant capacity, they serve breakfast, lunch, and of late also dinner. I have not had dinner there but have eaten there for breakfast dozens of times, and lunch close a dozen times. The food is excellent! Generous portions and signature WELL MADE omlets are great, and they offer beans as a substitute for home fries for the heart healthy customers as well as Nantucket Oatmeal which is a very large bowl of hot oat meal topped with blueberries, cranberries and brown sugar. That oat meal is to die for! The menu is very expansive and you can find something for everyone in your family there for breakfast from the infant's cheerios to the he-man lumberjack five by-pass chloresterol special.
Lunch menu is good with all the usual suspects and a few unique ones.
I give this place a 9 our of 10. It can be a little chilly in the winter as the high ceilings make the heating bill hard on the owner I think, but keep your sweater on and enjoy a great meal with endless...
