Maid-Rite — Restaurant in Galesburg

An Iowa institution at its best, this amazingly inexpensive, yet delicious restaurant chain is something to be admired.

The loose meat sandwiches are a regional food favorite; the original Maid-Rite tastes like a well done burger, but has the consistency of a sloppy joe, without the sauce. I didn't see the appeal until the first bite; it was like tiny, flavorful hamburgers in my mouth. The Cheese-Rite was even better, with a little mustard and chopped onions. The potato salad was an excellent side order to compliment the meat.

You won't mistake their burger for something fancy, it doesn't try to be and it shouldn't: made fast with simple fixings plus super affordable. The building/decor is older but a refreshing change from newer cookie cutter fast food chains. Stopped in today for a quick bite to eat with my out-of-town relatives who had NEVER had a "Maid-Rite" if you can believe it!!! They LOVED their meal, LOVED the great old pictures on the walls and just fell in love with the cool 1950's motif of the place!!
