What can I say? Wow! Just...wow. This is the best food I've eaten in a long time. Our family orders out on Fridays. I always order more than one thing, so that I can enjoy it throughout the weekend. We got tired of ordering from the same old places and we looking for something different when I came across Zona on Grub Hub. My husband and I remembered that our son's barber liked this place. We have also passed it many times and just never made it in, but always wanted to. We finally tried it last night. Smh.
Let's start off with the fact that they have an impressive menu with all kinds of selections. It was hard to choose. Everything sounded so good. We would soon find out that this place lived up to the hype.
We ordered the chicken fingers kids meal and hamburger kids meal for our picky kids. They loved it and even asked if they could have their leftovers for breakfast this morning...LOL!
My husband ordered the onion steak which came with rice and beans and plantains. He loved it. He also ordered a Jamaican beef patty that he said was extremely light and flaky. It also wasn't the regular beef patty you find in Jamaican restaurants or in the supermarket freezer. The patty looked homemade. In any case, he was far from disappointed.
We each got an order of jerk chicken spring rolls. O.M.G. Those were amazing! It looks like just a small portion (two rolls cut in half), but those rolls are so filling. They are packed with loads of flavor and they are not skimpy with the chicken either. The crust was amazing and the sauce for dipping that they come with...there are no words.
I ordered a bunch of appetizers and one entree. I still have plenty left that will probably last me until tomorrow as I eat little by little. As I just mentioned, I had the jerk rolls, but I also got the coconut shrimp, a beef empanada, jerk wings, the chicken fingers entree, and a side order of beans and rice.
The beef empanada: I have had many empanadas and also make empanadas occasionally at home. This was the best empanada I have ever tasted. The crust is light and flaky, the meat is flavorful, and I was sad when it was gone. I mean, I was literally sad taking the last bite. The sauce to dip it in is great too!
The coconut shrimp: These are probably one of the best(if not the best) coconut shrimp I have ever had and I have had my fair share. They are a decent size, the flavor is amazing, and the sauce they come with is delicious!
The jerk chicken wings: These are delicious! They are pretty spicy, but taste soooo good! Just the right amount of jerk and spice! They are decent sized wings too and you can choose the amount you want.
The chicken fingers entree: My only complaint is that I did not receive the sauce these were supposed to come with and the sauce is what sold me on this. Otherwise, I would have gotten the salmon entree. However, this wasn't enough for me to take off a star. I just think I had my heart set on the sauce(I love dipping sauces), so had I received it, I would have enjoyed these a lot better. I still have that awesome sauce left from my other items, so I will use that. Even plain though, the chicken fingers were good. I was also pleasantly surprised that it came with fries. I thought it only came with plantains. I got both!
The beans and rice: The beans were also scrumptious! I'm glad I got the white rice with them because the white rice compliments the flavor of the beans well! These were cooked to perfection and the fragrance is outstanding!
I am looking forward to ordering from this place many times in the future(maybe even next Friday...LOL) and am so happy we ordered from them!
Overall, if you want a place that's not your everyday, run-of-the-mill caribbean restaurant, but an actual flavor experience that will send your taste buds into overdrive, please check this place out. You will not be...
Read moreI waited over a month to post my review to make sure I was going to be fair. Having looked at several other reviews, I can see the experience I had was par for the course, it seems.
I stopped in here craving some carribean food and vibes after a hard day (and after seeing this restaurant on google for the longest) The staff was visibly disappointed when we said we were there to eat and would like to be seated, so I'm guessing most of their money comes from the bar and/or hookah, not the restaurant portion of the business but again, its just a guess.
Everything here was a wait of at least ten minutes. We waited to be asked for drinks, waited for the drinks, when the waiter rushed off before asking if we were ready to order food, waited to to be asked what we would like to order and waited 30 minutes for food, which would have been no problem if they had been busy or understaffed but inside when I went to the restroom, I found the staff all sat down, eating and chilling, which is great for them, they're only human but really?
I was never asked if I wanted a refill for my water but we were asked if we wanted to BUY another drink. I had to go ask a different staff member for the check as my waiter disappeared. Some menu items are unavailable when asked for (cachapas)
My companion said the drinks were not very good. The griot and pikliz was ok, the meat was overcooked so tough and dry.
HOWEVER: I do have to say, on the upside is the very best plantain sandwich I've ever eaten was had here. It was amazing. Perfect combination and flavors and if I were to think of any saving grace for the experience, it would be this dish,...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I attempted to eat here tonight and experienced horrible service. There were only about 10 customers in the building including us and it took over 1hr for us to receive our food. Our server (Nayeli), did not check on us at anytime during the night besides to bring our food or take our order, which is unacceptable especially how slow the night was. She informed us that the food took so long because there was an error in the computer system, which led to our order not being received in the kitchen. She only informed us of this, after we called her over to the table to find out what was taking so long for the food after waiting for more than 45mins. This could have easily been resolved if she would have been checking the status of our order with the kitchen and came to our table during the night to see if we wanted another drink or refill. To make it worse when we addressed our dissatisfaction she did not seem to care or take any accountability for the situation. When the food came out we took our food to go and ate at home.
Positive is that the food was actually good when we finally received it, which is the only received the review is 2 stars, so thank you kitchen staff. I had the stewed goat which was tasty and tender 4/5 stars and my girlfriend had the 8 spicy shrimp which was fair,...
