El Patron was an enjoyable visit. They are a nice addition to the Greentown scene and judging from the parking lot and number of full tables, a popular one.
The El Patron menu is very typical of Tex-Mex places throughout the country with the usual stock of tacos, burritos, enchiladas, tamales, chili rellenos, etc. They offer a ceviche inspired shrimp cocktail that I want to try that sounds like it could be good.
The obligatory Tex-Mex chips and salsa that come first were mediocre. The chips are a bit thicker than average and only so-so in flavor. The salsa tasted like it came from a bottle, enhanced with some fresh cilantro, but all in all, not that great. I understand the desire to reduce labor, but I think a fresh made salsa can really help distinguish a good Mexican restaurant.
We both ordered the carnitas dinner. It was very good. The slow cooked pork chunks were tender and tasty. The tiny bit of guacamole was a little stingy but quite tasty, as were the frijoles. Even the rice was quite good. Best of all were the corn tortillas, delicious nixtamalized beauties with superb real tortilla flavor. Much tastier than what you find at most places these days.
Service was just adequate, but that was because they were so busy, so I won't criticize for the fact that our very busy waiter was not able to get back to check on us until we were at least half way done eating. I would like to have asked for some limes and chopped onions, but by the time he came by it wasn't worth asking. Not a biggy. I should have asked the runner who brought our food.
So, to summarize, El Patron is a good alternative to the several Mexican restaurants in the area. It has pluses and minuses compared to the others, but certainly deserves...
Read moreI had to give it a one star because zero wasn't an option! Order brought to the table was wrong. Another server that didn't even take my order came and TOLD me what I had supposedly ordered according to her. Asked me if I pointed to it on the menu and when I told her I used my words she walked away and I was left with a plate of food I would have NEVER ordered. The other guest had a plate that was cold and food was chewy. No attempt to make the order right from the table or at the cash register! I brought the food that was delivered to me home and according to the menu it was to be an eight oz chicken breast. I weighed it and it was only 5.1 oz! So basically I paid $15 for 5.1 oz (supposed to be 8) of chicken and a plate of cheese that I didn't even order! I WILL NOT return for such poor service and no attempt to correct a mistake at the table or the...
