Our experience was quite different than what we had read in reviews. Our first time there, we want to be able to give it another chance because it is a small business in a small town but that's hard to swallow when your bill is over $50.
First, they need to clean the taps on their beer. The beer tasted so nasty. Our party each had different kinds so it wasn't any one beer specifically, it was all of them. So gross.
Two of us had a bowl, one chicken and one veggie. The rice was so gross it was like paste. The majority of the bowl is rice so you can imagine trying to choke that down. On the upside, the veggies were well roasted and seasoned and the chicken was grilled and seasoned well. The sauces in the bowl may have been good but it was too difficult to tell because the rice was seriously like glue. Nasty.
One person had shrimp Alfredo. The shrimp was grilled perfectly, that is definitely a plus! The Alfredo sauce has a bit of smokey taste to it and it was a good consistency. At $25 a plate, it is certainly overpriced for what it is. However, we do believe supporting small business when we can is important so it is a dish that we would consider ordering if we were to visit there and try to support them again. From our experience when we were all there, it was the only thing that was decent.
The last dish was shrimp lo mein. It was a special on the board and was not on the regular menu. We aren't sure how it could be dry yet the noodles were mushy at the same time. The sauce was essentially like burnt soy sauce, if you can imagine that. It was not good. The texture was so bizarre because even though the noodles were soft, it was dry? But again, the shrimp were grilled well but the sauce on them from the lo mein really ruined them.
It was freezing in the restaurant. A few of us left our coats on while others used their coats as a blanket on their lap.
We were a table of four and there were two people seated at the bar counter, there were six people in total working that we saw yet we still had a hard time getting anybody to come to the counter or to check on us. (You go up to a counter to order) The service was very dull, I wouldn't say necessarily rude but dull. No hello, no how are you guys doing, no explanation when we asked a question about the special on the board, it was just very dull and at times unhelpful.
In their reviews, this place was listed at $10 to $20 per person. There isn't a single thing on the menu (other than the drink menu) for $10. We had four people, two separate checks. We each had ordered one beer (that we all said tasted "skunk", "bad", etc. And the staff member just said "ok"), and a dinner entree. One couple's check was $62 and one was $55. Yes, we did go up to the counter to let them know the beer was bad. (Response was "ok") Yes, we did go up to the counter about the rice bowls (response was "I'm sorry, thanks for letting me know"). I am not saying there is anything wrong with those responses, each business can do what they want but that doesn't mean my expectations align with theirs.
Overall, we think we will go back and try them during their busier season. Maybe things will taste fresher or better? We do want to support small town businesses so we will give them another chance, if it goes well I will...
Read moreWe had lunch at Estelle's last September and we were so impressed with the food and service and we couldn't wait to go back again the next time we were in the area. We made it back this past May and at first we were confused by the new way of ordering the food at the counter. But we figured that Estelle's, like all other restaurants, were having problems getting enough help so they found a way to cut down on servers. The food on that visit was just okay. But when we went back in June the food wasn't as good at all! In fact their restaurant made potato chips were stale and some were actually soft. They were pretty bad! We had to wait almost 45 minutes for our food. It was a long lunch. One of the servers instead of tending to business was actually dancing around while she tried to do her work. Really unprofessional! And if you have to use the restroom while you're at Estelle's plan on waiting. There's only one bathroom for everyone to use. People were lined up outside the bathroom and into the sitting area. The food is very expensive at Estelle's and at our first visit we didn't mind so much because everything was so good. But after getting subpar food the last two visits we'll never go back again The real kicker is when a person orders their food at the counter they are given an option at check out if they want to give a tip. I'm guessing if they waited until after the customers got their food they wouldn't leave any tips so they try to catch you for a...
