My girlfriend and I decided to give this restaurant a try after seeing several positive comments about the food. Unfortunately, our experience fell far short of expectations.
Como Mexicanos we do not approve this place. The dishes we ordered were far from authentic Mexican cuisine. The rice lacked both flavor and the traditional orange color youâd expect, while the beans tasted like they came straight from a can. The birria and consome were the most disappointing the flavors were flat and uninspired. The quesabirria was overwhelmingly filled with cheese, and the birria ramen was nearly inedible after a couple of attempts, I ended up throwing it all away. 20 bucks to the trash.
The horchata was another major letdown. It was excessively sweet and heavy on cinnamon with no rice flavor whatsoeverâŚit was more like a cup of sugar if anything.
Overall, this restaurant misses the mark when it comes to authentic Mexican flavors. If youâre looking for true Mexican food, Iâd recommend exploring other dining options on the island.
We also ended up having an upset stomach afterwards. Which basically cut our day short since being out was quite uncomfortable. I definitely would appreciate a refund for this...
Read moreDELICIOSO! If you've had it, you know - its a spot worth the drive, whether to Honomu or for one of their tent pop-ups. Everything is delicious but my go to are the street tacos; probably the best on the island. Get them al pastor and taste what I can only describe as what I would imagine would be the culinary love child of a Mexican grandmother being taught to cook pork vindaloo.....rich, thick, curry like sauce....I'd buy the sauce by the cup if I could.
We all miss Lucy's, but this place takes the pain of that loss away ;)
And what is up with the rice and beans??? Seriously, I don't know what magic voodoo they do. I'm typically not a rice and beans on the side person, but honestly both have the most delicious and COMPLEX flavor profiles I've had in a simple side of r&b that I can remember.....its like there's a hint of fish stock in the rice, maybe prawn seasoning??? The richness of the beans, with fresh queso blanco on top....its 9 pm and if they were open right now I would go. Instead I'm going to eat a bowl of cheerios and patiently wait for...
Read moreAfter a visit to Akaka Falls State Park and after scanning nearby food reviews, we dropped in at Big Island Birria Boss. We were hungry but didn't want a huge amount of food so we decided to share an order of Birria Nachos. Delicious! We've never had nachos exactly like these, I'd call them Hawaiian Mexican, making them perfect for where we were sitting. Blue tortilla chips, shredded beef, some cheese - a perfect amount in our estimation, meaning the cheese was on the chips rather than the other way around - but also a mayonnaise / hot sauce mixed sauce that reminded me of similar sauces served on other foods on the island. The server was very welcoming. Most customers were coming in for take-out, but we sat & ate there. The space is not large, but the tables are very family friendly and the inside of the restaurant is colorful. Customers bus...
