My girlfriend and I decided to give this restaurant a try after seeing several positive comments about the food. Unfortunately, our experience fell far short of expectations.

Como Mexicanos we do not approve this place. The dishes we ordered were far from authentic Mexican cuisine. The rice lacked both flavor and the traditional orange color you’d expect, while the beans tasted like they came straight from a can. The birria and consome were the most disappointing the flavors were flat and uninspired. The quesabirria was overwhelmingly filled with cheese, and the birria ramen was nearly inedible after a couple of attempts, I ended up throwing it all away. 20 bucks to the trash.

The horchata was another major letdown. It was excessively sweet and heavy on cinnamon with no rice flavor whatsoever…it was more like a cup of sugar if anything.

Overall, this restaurant misses the mark when it comes to authentic Mexican flavors. If you’re looking for true Mexican food, I’d recommend exploring other dining options on the island.

We also ended up having an upset stomach afterwards. Which basically cut our day short since being out was quite uncomfortable. I definitely would appreciate a refund for this...

DELICIOSO! If you've had it, you know - its a spot worth the drive, whether to Honomu or for one of their tent pop-ups. Everything is delicious but my go to are the street tacos; probably the best on the island. Get them al pastor and taste what I can only describe as what I would imagine would be the culinary love child of a Mexican grandmother being taught to cook pork vindaloo.....rich, thick, curry like sauce....I'd buy the sauce by the cup if I could.

We all miss Lucy's, but this place takes the pain of that loss away ;)

And what is up with the rice and beans??? Seriously, I don't know what magic voodoo they do. I'm typically not a rice and beans on the side person, but honestly both have the most delicious and COMPLEX flavor profiles I've had in a simple side of r&b that I can remember.....its like there's a hint of fish stock in the rice, maybe prawn seasoning??? The richness of the beans, with fresh queso blanco on top....its 9 pm and if they were open right now I would go. Instead I'm going to eat a bowl of cheerios and patiently wait for...

After a visit to Akaka Falls State Park and after scanning nearby food reviews, we dropped in at Big Island Birria Boss. We were hungry but didn't want a huge amount of food so we decided to share an order of Birria Nachos. Delicious! We've never had nachos exactly like these, I'd call them Hawaiian Mexican, making them perfect for where we were sitting. Blue tortilla chips, shredded beef, some cheese - a perfect amount in our estimation, meaning the cheese was on the chips rather than the other way around - but also a mayonnaise / hot sauce mixed sauce that reminded me of similar sauces served on other foods on the island. The server was very welcoming. Most customers were coming in for take-out, but we sat & ate there. The space is not large, but the tables are very family friendly and the inside of the restaurant is colorful. Customers bus...

I was really looking forward to this place, and was really disappointed when we drove to Honomu with the family and they were closed for the day. It's located on a little main street of a small town.....close to Akaka falls, but nothing else. Stuff happens, but it's frustrating when nothing on the big island is close, and you drive all the way in, to find out they're closed for the day. They're normally open Saturdays (today), and closed Wed-Fri. Too bad. People were inside, so maybe they're having a training.... We come to the big island every once in a while. Maybe I'll try again next time. Edit: Reply to owners comment. We come back every 6 months or so. I'll definitely try again. And will edit accordingly.

Overall experience was good though $31 for one person. Ordered Quesadilla Plate(beef), Apple Soft Drink and two waters. 5 minute wait till food was ready during fairly busy crowd. The two quesadilla comes with corn tortillas, overflow melted cheese (fried cheese) and plenty of meat. The beans were spicy hot but not overly spicy hot. Rice has an odd flavor but put in the sauce/juice auju and made it quite good. A little greasy in the quesadilla and not sure I'm a fan of the fried cheese.all around the tortilla. Decent atmosphere. Poplar place and you find it in the quaint town of Honomu. It was $31 though so won't be heading back fast. See my pics. Oh, found two lime wedges after I started my 2nd quesadilla.
