Beautiful restaurant right on the sand. Service fell apart right from the beginning. I’ve never sent any drink or food item back (even if it wasn’t good) until tonight when my wife’s margarita tasted like spicy ocean water. Nasty. After an hour of sitting and waiting they took our order, and after another half hour they told us they were out of fried rice. They served the dish on plain white rice, and the other dish that was supposed to come with chips and salsa was served with fries. Not a big deal. But apparently the table next to us was having similar issues because a long and loud conversation with the manager was being had throughout dinner. Our waiter complained about them to us multiple times and was often heard mumbling his distaste for them under his breath. At the end of our (very very long) evening at the restaurant they agreed to remove the terrible drink and the white rice dish from the ticket, but we were still left with an overpriced and uncomfortable dinner. The sunset was...

Wonderful beachside dining. This restaurant has been here for decades. It has been here for over 40 years; ever since I was growing up. The menu has not changed much over the years. They offer anything from salads to hamburgers to turkey clubs. They offer a full bar selection along with their well known Trent Jones and Arnold Palmer tea drinks. The sunset is spectacular here at night. I always order off menu turkey sandwich (they always put TON of turkey) with white bread (toasted) with Mayo on the side, no tomato. Fries are a $3 upgrade from their standard chips or fresh fruit sides. The prices are reasonable. Ovaltine chocolate shakes for the kid or kid at heart is a fun way to splurge during the day or at night. The same wait staff has worked there for YEARS! They remember us each time we come snd we only come 3-4 times a year. We love this hotel and restaurant and we hope you do to!...

We originally went for a few drinks while we watched the sunset on the beach but decided to stay for dinner. Bad choice. The food is simply alright but you pay quite a lot for it compared to all the other places we have gone to here. The server also did not treat us well. Possibly because we were not resort guests 🤷‍♂️ She only checked on us to get our order then to give us our check about 45 minutes later. We were planning on ordering more drinks but guess not after getting forgotten about. The place was half empty and she was sitting at the bar chatting for most of that time.

I gave a second star because the atmosphere was nice, however, we will never consider staying at this resort after...

Arrive early and walk the grounds, see the manta rays after dinner. Or wander the grounds and star-gaze (it was a new moon with great visibility) The daily catch was delicious and filling. The Meyer Lemon Cheesecake was so-so; it was airy and not creamy. It made me wonder if it was from a jello mix, honestly. But I'm from New York so maybe my cheesecake standards are high. The Meyer Lemon was a small layer on top of a regularly flavored cake. Lots of blueberries and strawberries with it was nice. If I went again I would get a more local dessert, which probably plays to their strengths. Complementary valet parking. All in all, a very nice dinner, great service, and a memorable atmosphere.

Gorgeous sunsets, amazing service, delicious food. My family and I ended our week long trip to Kona last week by choosing the ideal spot to have our last meal together beachside at the Mauna Kea restaurant, Hau Tree. We had such an exceptional experience and were there not as guests of the hotel but instead just beach guests, where they allow for free parking and access to this hidden gem. If you are looking for a perfect evening with your friends or family to stroll on an impeccable white sand beach and relax among the palm trees and a beautiful setting, you will not forget the experience at Hau Tree. Enjoy.
