Alden Bar — Restaurant in Helena Township

THIS PLACE IS SHADY! DO NOT PLAY PULL TABS HERE. We sat on the patio, and each had 3 cocktails while playing pull tabs. Every time we went to cash in our winners, they would avoid us at the counter and serve every last person there (even ones that approached the bar after us) before addressing us. One of the times we sent up a friend to cash out the $75 ticket and the bartender told her she had to go down to the grocery store to cash it out because they didn't have enough cash in the till ...at 4:00 p.m.?! (in my experience, pull tab funds are separate from the bar register). She said that we could cash it out anywhere in town (what?!). My friend returned to the table empty handed and I went up there with the same tickets and was given the $75.00, after being ignored for a while. We purchased more tickets and ended up winning $205! My husband went up to the bar to cash out and was given the same run around about needing to cash it at the grocery store down the street because they didn't have the cash. Against our better judgement, we took our tickets to Higgin's and the cashier there was so confused. She said there was no way for her to verify with the state what we bought or how much we won, and she had never heard of the bar sending people elsewhere to cash the tickets. It was even suggested that the police be called. So back to the bar we went. At this point we had wasted at least an hour arguing with the bartender, driving to the grocery store, debating with her and now to be back at the bar and still not have our winnings. The owner Megan came out and told us repeatedly that she didn't have $205 in the till and couldn't cash us out, but anywhere is town would be able to do it for us. Finally, I told her if she didn't scrounge up the cash, I would be involving the authorities. Miraculously, the cash appears (mostly in one-dollar bills) shortly after. Once the cash was in hand we were "permanently banned from their bar". As if we'd ever step foot in there again. My guess is they are going broke and had been dipping into the pull tab funds and got caught robbing Peter to pay Paul. Every bar I have ever worked in starts their till with $400 in cash. To not have $200 by 4:00 in the afternoon...

Used to be great place. I was very disappointed in the lousy sandwich I ordered! I ordered a BLT, as I have several times before. The bread was cheap 'store bought' bread, there were only three small pieces of fatty bacon, and had one small slice of tomato. Previously it was good bread, lightly toasted, 6 or 7 pieces of bacon and two or three tomato slices! This place used to serve one of the best BLT's around - NOT ANY MORE! Went in on wings Wednesday and got told wings were half off so that what I ordered. Ended up waiting 45 minutes for a dozen wings that weren't even breaded or seasoned they just dropped the wings in the fryer and then sent them on their way. Went to go check out and was told I had to pay full price cause I was doing take out, if I had known that to begin with I would have gotten something else or I would have just dined in since I had to wait 45...
