As a semi-local with a second home in Huntingdon, we make the trip from the Philly area often. Naturally, we’ve been on a mission to find great pizza in the region—a search that has been enjoyable, but has yet to land on a definitive favorite.
We’ve found some local shops make their dough too thick for our preference but are happy to stretch it thinner on request. Others will go “well done” for a better crust texture on request. But the real challenge? Finding a sauce and cheese combination that stands out. Does nobody appreciate the magic of a pinch of oregano or a dash of garlic powder? I like to marinate sliced garlic in a can of tomato sauce for a few hours with a pinch of marjoram or Mexican Oregano when assembling home pizza.
Enter Speck’s Gourmet Deli. After our third and most recent visit, we’re officially calling them a front-runner in our hunt.
What Makes Speck’s Stand Out? ✅ The Sauce – Balanced, flavorful, and—thankfully—not too sweet, which has been a dealbreaker for us at other spots.
✅ The Cheese – It actually tastes like mozzarella. Too many places around here seem to blend in something that adds an odd tang. And yes, Speck's produces that telltale oil on top—some might complain, but that’s just fat separating from whole milk mozzarella. You can avoid it with part-skim, but then you lose that creamy, authentic flavor. Real cheese pizza should have a little shine on top.
✅ The Dough – This has been the most variable component in our visits. But on our last trip, it was on point—thin-ish, crisp-bottomed (even after the drive home), and flavorful. Maybe a touch sweet, but overall, a solid foundation.
Beyond the Pizza For the first time, we took a good look at Speck's full menu while enjoying our pie, and it’s packed with interesting specialty pizzas, sandwiches, and entrees. There’s a lot to explore, and we’re excited to branch out on future visits.
Addressing Other Reviews We’ve read some mixed opinions, so here’s our take: 📌 We’ve only had friendly service. 📌 We’ve never had a pizza that was even close to “disgusting” (and we can’t say that about every place in town). I'd even say every pie has been above average for the region. 📌 The prices? More than fair—they actually feel like a bargain.
So, for now, Speck’s takes the lead in our search for the best pizza in the Huntingdon/Raystown area. We’ll be back to explore more of the menu and will follow up with another review. If you’re on the hunt for a quality pie in Central PA, give...
Read moreCheck out the helpful review by Tsering posted recently. I visited this terrific eatery with her, her husband, and my family on a vacation getaway. We originally planned to go to Top's Diner across the road, which definitely appears more upstanding on the outside. But don't let external appearance fool you. We poked our heads into Specks and changed our minds! The interior dining space is cozy and tastefully decorated - and clean! We ordered 8 Philly Cheese Steak sandwiches and all agreed that they were amazing! You'll enjoy fast and friendly service here and the kids even get creative and paper to draw on! The prices are reasonable and easier on the wallet than a standard diner, making this an excellent choice. Whether you're visiting our local, you've got to check out this...
Read moreWhere do I begin? We have been going to Specks since 2009. We drive roughly 50 minutes from our home to eat here. When we do we pass many other places to eat. The owners and staff are just amazing people. I personally recommend the buffalo chicken pizza and their italian dressing. I would eat there every day if possible. When you order a fountain soda they come out in great big cups, unlike other places who provide small cups and require multiple refills. In my opinion, this is the best pizza around. The pizza is always cooked to perfection and seasoned perfectly. The place is always very clean and well kept. The coffee bar is built beautifully. Now I can't wait till my next day off to go eat. See you Thursday Specks!! We...
