Sometimes, the best culinary surprises come in the most unassuming packages. La Criollita Cafeteria might look like your standard neighborhood cafeteria, but within its no-frills exterior lies a world of deliciously authentic Cuban flavors.

While the extensive menu might feel a bit overwhelming for first-timers, the friendly staff are happy to offer guidance. I zeroed in on a few hidden gems that showcase their home-style mastery.

The fried plantains were a revelation. Perfectly ripe, they achieved that magical combination of caramelized sweetness on the outside and soft, pillowy texture within. If you think you know fried plantains, try theirs – they might just set a new standard.

Next, I sampled their Frituras al Estilo Cubano (don't let the unassuming name fool you!). Savory ground beef, wrapped in a delicate dough and deep-fried, provided a satisfying mix of textures and comforting flavor.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was their house-made chicken and pork croquette. Too often, croquettes can be bland and heavy, but La Criollita's version was light, bursting with juicy meat, and packed with savory goodness. This is the kind of simple snack that becomes a craving.

La Criollita Cafeteria isn't a place for a fancy night out. You'll find plastic plates, cafeteria-style service, and a no-nonsense atmosphere. But if you value authentic flavors, satisfying portions, and the warmth of a family-run eatery, this is absolutely worth seeking out. It's a reminder that some of the best Cuban cuisine isn't always found in the flashiest spots – sometimes, it's hidden right in your...

Dear Truck Drivers, Fathers/Mothers & Tri-Rail/Metro-Rail riders. To the working class Latino American who frequent this cafeteria. On October 5th they had a surprise inspection. They were walloped with 19 violations one which included "Roach activity in the middle of the main kitchen," & "soil residue build-ups." The inspector also noted that their Pork, Croquettes, & Ham were cold. He was giving us a heads up that their food is kept overnight. Moreover, adding insult to injury, the inspector also observed that there was "no running hot water & no soap for the employees to wash their hands." He also noted that there's a big garbage can full of garbage blocking the entrance to the bathroom. Don't be fooled by the 4.4 star rating and their good reviews. The city inspectors always...

If you want quality cuban food that makes you feel right at home, like your abuelita just whipped you up the gnarliest spread for breakfast/lunch of all your favorites, this is the place to go.

The food always comes out piping hot, the customer service is always on point and making sure you get everything just right and make sure you’re always good, and the price for the amount of food you get is the biggest win of it all in my opinion.

Don’t let the shabbiness of the outside or the area fool you; that’s part of the charm. This place is what me and my significant other have always called it; a diamond in the rough! Introduced my SO to this place 7 years ago, and we make it a habit to go at least once...

Food is good. The service is a little trying, because of the language barrier. The lady operating the window gets frustrated with me because I don't good Spanish. She avoids me as long as she can, but the gentleman inside does speak English so I suggest gringos to place their order with him. Great prices on breakfast. Prices a little higher on dinner plates, but the amount of food you get justifies it. Recommend the pork chunks and rice. Flan for dessert.
