Tacos el Norte in Highwood, IL is nothing short of a hidden gem, and I'm thrilled to share my overwhelmingly positive experience with this authentic family Mexican restaurant. From the moment you step inside, you can feel the warmth and hospitality that radiates through every aspect of this place. Everyone goes above and beyond by remembering regular customers' names, making you feel like a part of their family.
One of the standout features of Tacos el Norte is their unwavering commitment to serving homemade, genuine Mexican cuisine. You won't find any canned beans, prepackaged lettuce, or even pre-shredded cheese here. They take pride in crafting their dishes from scratch, and it shows in the quality of the food. Every time I visit, I watch them fry tortilla chips to perfection, and the taste is simply unparalleled.
What truly sets Tacos el Norte apart is their dedication to using the freshest and most authentic ingredients. You can taste the love and tradition that go into each dish, as many of their recipes have been passed down through generations. The authenticity shines through in every bite, making it a standout in the neighborhood and a testament to the rich culinary heritage of Mexico.
I love that they carry Mexican Coke (sweetened with cane sugar) an d other authentic sodas along with handcrafted horchata and pineapple drinks. These beverages perfectly complement the amazing flavors of the food and transport you to the streets of Mexico with each sip.
And let's not forget the three leches cake! It's a true delicacy, but you'll need to be quick because it sells out fast – or family loves it!
While there are plenty of Mexican dining options in the Highland Park area, Tacos el Norte stands head and shoulders above the rest. Not only is the food exceptional, but the staff also treats you like family. The warmth and genuine care they extend to their customers make each visit a memorable experience.
In a world of dining choices, Tacos el Norte is a shining example of what a family-owned, authentic Mexican restaurant should be. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and pay them a visit. You won't be disappointed, and you might just find your new favorite...

If you're on the hunt for a Mexican dining experience that tantalizes your taste buds and tickles your funny bone, look no further than Tacos El Norte. From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted not just with warm smiles, but with a level of friendly banter that made me feel like I was catching up with old friends.
The decor is vibrant and inviting, with colorful murals that tell stories of Mexican folklore and cozy seating that beckons you to sit back and relax. But let’s be real – we’re here for the food and the laughs, and both were in abundant supply.
We kicked things off with the guacamole, made fresh at the table by our server, Monica, who had us laughing within seconds. “If this guac doesn’t make you dance, you’re eating it wrong!” She proclaimed, and dance we did – right into the bowl with our chips. The
For the main course, I went for the enchiladas, while my friend braved the notorious burrito. Both were excellent!!
The highlight of the evening was the tacos al pastor, which our other server, Carmen, claimed were made with “extra love and a pinch of magic.” I’m convinced she was right – each bite was a perfect blend of savory pork, sweet pineapple, and tangy salsa. Carmen’s playful recommendation to “save room for dessert, or you’ll regret it forever” was spot on.
To cap off our meal, we indulged in the churros with chocolate dipping sauce. “These churros are so good, they’ve got their own fan club,” Carmen joked. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and dusted with just the right amount of cinnamon and sugar, they were the perfect sweet ending to a delightful meal.
Tacos El Norte isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an experience. The food is phenomenal, but it’s the staff’s playful, friendly banter that makes it truly special. If you’re looking for a place where the cuisine is as rich as the humor, you’ve found your new favorite spot. Can’t wait to go back and see what new jokes Monica and Carmen have up...
Read moreI have been coming here for years and I order regularly takeout. This time, my experience was horrible, I usually have very good service, but today since we sit, this waitress called Chela took a lot of time to come and take our order, she was chatting to another waitress who is Colombian and very rude too, and finally she took the time to come. She never came to see how we were doing, I was asking for her to come, another waitress ended coming up on her place to give me a Diet Coke. Finally I asked for the check, I had had it with her, you know what she did next? She sat and started eating her lunch, totally disregarding my check. I had to ask for another waitress to help me. It is very sad that a long time good restaurant hires this kind of personnel that do not care at all about ruining your reputation. I hope management reads this, because today there was no one to supervise them, and I think that is why they treated us like this. I will never...
