@TheWigPenPizzaP is decent if you like cheese on your pizza.
The main entry area and front room of the place smelled sour, as if it were a rest area restroom with that not so quiet bleach odor mixed with sewer smell mixed with wood. That set the tone. The décor was nice. The staff people friendly. I noticed several waitresses wearing sandals/open toed shoes. While I adore a good bright pink pedicure, I just find it unsanitary if wait staff wear such shoes.
My 10 inch pizza pie was substantial. It was The Flying Tomato pan crust with Italian sausage and bacon. It was off putting I ordered Italian Sausage and bacon as the toppings but there were tomato slices on top when it was delivered to the table. It must be their signature thing. I don't care for tomatoes.
The pizza was heaped with cheese. I found it difficult to find any toppings on the pizza and there just wasn't enough sauce to my liking. But there was cheese. Cheese galore. Lots of cheese. Maybe all the toppings shifted to one corner of the pizza during baking? My dining experience was mouthfuls of crust and cheese with a small smattering taste of sauce with occasional sausage pieces thrown it. It really was quite cheesy tasteless. I didn't ever taste the bacon. Unsatisfied. It was cheesy though. I had fun cutting through the cheesiness. I don't diss on cheese. There just wasn't much flavor at all to this pizza.
Appetizers were ok. The chicken wings (wings zings) were meaty and zesty. The spinach and artichoke dip was served with corn chips. It was good at first but cooled quickly and became hard and difficult to 'dip' in the chips, becoming a mass of material after finally cooling. The breaded mushrooms were very hot and good.
The staff were accommodating and helpful and nice. I am glad I tried this business out. You might as well give it a try. You'll be...
Read moreHomecoming Weekend in Iowa City. I get it. It's crazy busy and you are gonna have a wait. I walked in to order 3 large pizzas after the game around 8:20PM. I sat at the bar for roughly 10 minutes, the 2 bartenders were busy and stressed and no one said "Hi" or "I'll be right with you" (understand I am Old School and no Snowflake). As an old guy U of I grad from 1991, I got it, and I was super patient, because there is no other pizza like this for me....and did I mention it was homecoming?
Out of nowhere, this tall, super friendly wunderkind bartender gal with a sweet a@@ hat on, pops in front of me-obviously doing 5 other things and points to me with total authority finger and kindness and asks if anyone has gotten to me yet. I tell her it's okay, I know you are busy and I can wait (I was the last seat at the end of the bar on the West). She said "No! I got you, what is your order, you are good!"
I ordered my favorite, then a supreme, and a cheese for my Sophomore son....
My super server person with the hat, working the bar and anyone in her path, kept my two Fireball drink orders full and checked on me like family. I totally wanted to give her 1st name only credit to super recognize her, but her ID is only 101 BAR. So I will leave it as this:
Go to the Wig and Pen for amazing pizza in Coralville, Iowa and if you sit at the bar and you are thinking about the service more than the amazing pizza you have consumed, you have been tended to by "101 BAR".
God bless the Wig and Pen, and Tenders who care. We...
Read moreVery bad experience for a long time Coralville institution. Went to lunch on a Sunday afternoon in a group of 11 people, seating was available but took quite q while to get the table ready. While it was on the busier side, service was slow and lacking. Drinks to forever and we had to go and find someone to ask for refills. Appetizers we ordered took almost 45min to arrive. When our main meals came (knowing that pizzas will be 30-45min) almost 30 min later, we were one pizza short. The waitress never put the order in. When we asked about it, the gal who brought the food out (not our original waitress), got very snippy when we asked about it. Her response was they could put the order inand now that they were not so busy it would not take so long. Unaccceptable. We had already been there an hour and a half so did not want the pizza, so she went to talk to manager. It was almost another 15 minutes before the Manager finally came over to apologize for the mistake and only offered to comp the appetizers. Cheap. Should have also comped the price of the missing pizza. In the end, the food we did we receive was good, however the two hours, mistakes, slowness etc were not worth the the time invested. We also over heard other tables around us complaining about long times and also saw people come in well after us get their food before us. Not the best experience for a first time at this highly recommended...
