On Saturday, August 11th I took several family members to the Iron Ridge Inn as a going-away-to-college dinner for my granddaughter. I've eaten there before so I knew the food would be good... and 10 out of 11 people were very satisfied. The one who was disappointed was me. My wife and I both ordered their beer battered walleye fillet. Now I know that you can always expect to find some bones - and yes, I found several - but I've never had a fillet with so many fish scales!! I'm not talking 4 or 5, I'm talking 30 to 40 in the first several bites... so much so that I opened the fillet by peeling off all the breading and ate only the white meat. And yes, after the first few bites I did bring it to the intention of our waitress who said "Hmmm... I'm sorry. I'll go talk to the kitchen" and promptly disappeared. She came back about 15 minutes later and said to the group, "Does anyone need anything else to drink?". So I brought it to her attention again and even showed her the pile of fish scales on my plate, and she said something like "Let me go check on that again" and once more left the room. The next time I saw her was when she brought the bill to be paid - by ME!!! Everyone was done eating by then, so I thought "The h* with it" and just kept quiet. Now, I know I'm a practical person and I know that every once in a while I can expect something to be not perfect when dining out. OK, so it happens. But what really bothers me is what appeared to be a lack of concern on the part of management! If I were running this place I would immediately have given my customer a new fillet - with my apologies, but NO ONE even came back to check! When I went out to pay the bill, the Hostess asked "How was everything?", to which I replied "I had a terrible meal but everyone else seemed satisfied." And she said something like, "Oh, I'm sorry... would you like to add anything more to the gratuity?" - which, of course, was already automatically figured in with the bill. Incredulously, I replied "NO!" and paid the bill. So... now you may ask, "Would you ever go back there?" And I would reply, "Hmmm... probably. But I would never again order the fish!!!" (And in case you're wondering, my wife's fillet had some scales also - but nowhere near as...
Read moreIron ridge inn has been my favorite place to eat since I had been pregnant with my first child 6 years ago. My husband worked there throughout high school and introduced me when we started dating. This time around, I am expecting our second child and often crave iron ridge inn. Tonight, on the other hand, I had the worst experience we have ever had. We ordered our meals. My husband ordered the special of a 14 oz New York strip with haystack, medium rare. My children ordered burgers and fish for myself. My fish was excellent, no issues. However, the steak that my husband had ordered was very well done. He ate about half of it because he does not like sending food back. The burgers were also extremely over cooked/dry. We let the waitress know and she was extremely apologetic (not her fault). The waitress came back to our table and offered free drink cards for next visit. Normally if something was a little off, I would alert the waitress and expect nothing in return but 3 out of our 4 meals were not what they usually are. The owner came over to our table and I expressed how this was the first time we had ever ran into this situation and we are regulars. In which she relied “I know”. She offered the drink cards or desert in place of an entire steak dinner. I wasn’t concerned about the burgers, but an entire New York strip… I left nearly in tears as I felt terrible explaining our dissatisfaction and felt extremely belittled by the owner. Unfortunately, we probably will no longer be back and give the free drink cards away. It’s unfortunate as eating has been a struggle during my pregnancy and their food had been a...
Read moreSadly, this was the second disappointing dinner we’ve had here. Tonight two of us ordered the filet ($28), to be cooked medium. Both came out purple - under cooked to say the least. Okay…it happens. Asked for them to be cooked longer to medium. They both came back and one was mildly better, mine was still purple, as if they did nothing to it. So, back it went and then came back for a third time and, sadly, still…purple. By this point I just gave up and ate the French fries and onions.
Told the waitress (who was great) but nothing done to the bill, no offer for anything else. Told the hostess who acted genuinely concerned and brought the owner over. Told her what the issue was as and her first question was “Did you eat any of it?” Well, yes. I tried it to see if I could get past the gross inability to cook a steak. Her response was to run my card, put the check in front of me and say “I took a little off” and walk away.
$8 off a $28 steak that I had two bites of. Look- steaks come out under cooked. I get it. But do a little...
