"Almost California Burrito" Grabbed a late lunch here with the family. Had street corn in a bowl. It was really good, but in my opinion not as good at some places like Taco Lu. My wife loves the pork chops. Salmon in the salmon taco was a little too fishy tasting this time (according to my son and wife who both love fish). Salsa with the chips is very refreshing (mild). Queso was very good but a little runny. I love the french fries. I've seen fries like this at other places, and love them. OK, now to the part I was excited about. Every time I go to a Mexican style restaurant I immediately, and admittedly paradoxically, look for a California burrito. It's kind of like a carne asada burrito but with french fries, pico, sour cream, maybe guac, maybe cheese. I noticed right away they had a california burrito, but when I read the description it was absolutely in no way a California burrito. Saddened, I kept perusing the menu. Then I discovered they had something called a "San Diego Burrito." Low, and behold the San Diego Burrito should actually be called the "Almost California Burrito" b/c all you have to do is substitute steak in to replace the chicken (for an upcharge) and you have a California Burrito! And it was really good. My wife claims it is even better if you get it with their seasoned ground beef instead of the carne asada. Sounds blasphemous to me, but might be true. Other note, I have no idea who the player in front of the gator logo is supposed to be. I had to really suppress some triggered hostility in order to enjoy my meal with such a vile symbol and color scheme so close to my table.

Happy Taco Tuesday yall!! Today hubby and I went to Casa Maria off Belfort Road. We've always enjoyed this place, but haven't been in a very long time. I was excited to see many updates to the menu. We got an order of the Carne asada fries. Those were absolutely perfect! For tacos I got The Chicki Boom Boom (Fried chicken with corn, cheese, and Boom Boom sauce), The 904 Fresco (Steak with grilled queso fresco, avocado sauce, and cilantro), and a Choripollo (Chorizo, chicken, queso, and grilled onions). Hubby got 2 Mexican style asada tacos and a Casa Maria Taco with carnitas (sour cream and grilled onions). I enjoyed all 3 of my tacos, but the one that stood out the most to me was the choripollo taco. I LOVE getting this as an entree here and there from a variety of places, bit I always feel like a bloated mess after eating it, so having a little bit in taco was fantastic and I loved it! Hubby enjoyed his tacos too. We hope to not forget about this place as we have in the past because they were always so good when we went on a regular basis, and today they really reminded us of that.

I used to work right around the corner from this place pre-COVID, when it was called Los Portales. I would always get 3 beef enchiladas a la carte because they were cheap (I think $7-$8 for a plate that I could barely finish) and amazingly delicious! I got lunch here for the first time in almost 3 years, and things have changed. I just paid $18 for three beef enchiladas with lettuce and sour cream on the side, no rice and beans. The food was cold by the time I got back to the office (literally right on the other side of JTB), and did not look appealing at all. The beef was clumpy and not well seasoned, the enchilada sauce tasted bitter, and there was barely any cheese on top. I understand that inflation is driving up prices, but the increased price for the food that I was served today isn’t worth it. The service was fast, and the staff was friendly as always, so I’m hoping that the food today was just a one time thing.

We live right around the corner and have tried this place SEVERAL times hoping for the service to get better. Last night will be our last time. The food is decent; however, the service is terrible. Every time we have gone in, there are 5 maybe 6 tables. There are several waitresses standing around on their phones and it still takes over five minutes for anyone to come to the table. Last night, the waitress came once to our table, and we ordered drinks and food at the same time. She dropped off our drinks and never came back. The food came and we needed some hot sauce. Our server was standing at the bar scrolling through her phone talking to other employees. I tried to get her attention and couldn't. About 10 minutes later when my husband was almost done eating, the server still had not comes back so I signaled another one to get some hot sauce. She said "sure, I'll be right back," and went to the computer and started looking at her phone. At this time, my food was cold. I made eye contact with the server who I had asked the hot sauce for twice and she just looked at me. Another five minutes went by, and I finally got up and walked over to our server who was still scrolling and talking to other employees to ask for the hot sauce. She goes to get it and comes back and says "sorry, she forgot," talking about the original server I had asked. I'm not sure how you forget when someone asks you for something and you take three steps and start scrolling on your phone. I was a server for seven years and truly cannot understand how this place is still in business. The servers wonder around aimlessly like they have nothing to do and don't pay any attention to their 2 tables unless you get their attention. We will not be returning, which is sad, because that would be a weekly spot for us being we live...

Love how convenient this location is to me. When I came here for the first time I ate inside, the booths were cozy and the food and service were excellent. I love their Belfort combo (specifically, the tostadas), along with their nachos supreme.

However the last couple times I ordered food to go, I was quite disappointed with my food and experience. For instance, when I placed my order on the phone today, the hostess that was taking my order sounded so clueless and lost when I was specifically explaining to her verbatim what I wanted to eat. 😬 Specifically I wanted a bean and cheese burrito with my Belfort combo, and I was quite annoyed that I got my burrito with nothing but cheese in it. Mainly because I stated MULTIPLE times that I wanted beans. šŸ¤¦šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Then, once I came to pick up the food and was getting ready to pay, I dealt with that same girl - she is petite with dark hair and glasses for reference. I was impatiently waiting for my receipt to print (and had to go back and pay with a different card because my original card has issues) so I could sign it. Out of the blue this girl asks, "is everything okay?" 🤨 I responded "yeah, everything's fine!". When really I am beyond annoyed that this host is very incompetent at doing her job and could care less about providing good customer service. šŸ˜• Considering this event, along with the subpar food quality, it's safe to say I won't be...
