Felina Steak - Jersey City — Restaurant in Jersey City

Last night I traveled into Jersey City for a night out on the town with a friend. We had reservations at Felina for 730. Seated promptly and accomodated very well with the seating I had requested, which was as close to the windows as possible. Gorgeous view from where we sat (first 2 pics)

Our waiter was polite, attentive and engaging. My friend ordered a tequila and titos and I ordered a smoked old fashioned with Whistle Pig. I asked for 3 cherries (my signature). Drinks came back about 15 mins later - hers was good, mine was not. Mine looked like it had been sitting at the well for some time as the ksrge ice cube was melted much more than it should have been, had 2 cherries and and tasted flat. Sent it back and it came back much better, but not smoked at all. Waiter was on it tho and brought the glass smoker to the table to make sure it was right this time.

For appetizers we ordered the Calamari and meatballs. Both were average. Calamari was stringy tho, and they served it with ranch (weird) and marinara. Meatballs tasted like they were missing ingredients but still weren't terrible - but they were small.

For main course, she ordered rigatoni ragu. I ordered a sopressetta pizza with hot honey and cacio de pepe. All 3 entrees were subpar. My pizza looked like someone took a bite out of one of the slices and covered it with a piece of sopressata. Cacio de pepe looked like half a serving, was overly salty and drenched in a cream sauce. It was cooked well trho - a very good al dente. The rigatoni ragu was ok, but not great by any means.

For dessert we ordered cheesecake and tiramisu, along with a double espresso and cappuccino. To our disappointment, we were told that there was no coffee available at all, because the machine was broke. The tiramisu was good. The cheesecake was warm, like it had been sitting for some time.

Overall, the ambience was amazing. Great views and a very trendy design on the interior. The service was very good. The food experience was absolutely subpar. The icing on the cake, was that we struck up conversation with the table next to us, and they had the same feeling and reactions as we did about their meals.

While the restaurant is in a great location and has wonderful views of the lower NY Harbor and the Statue of Liberty it does not make up for the very loud setting, poor service, unflattering dishes and over priced food and wine list. The restaurant was 35% full, our table was near one end, we had trouble hearing each other without speaking very loudly We ordered several small plates to start, the grilled octopus was burnt. The rabbit crostini as so so It took over an hour to get our mains. Two ordered the Black Cod and both thought it to be tasteless. The polenta was a disappointment, left half unfinished among a family that really enjoys polenta. The broccolini was so drench it butter, most went uneaten. I had the $30 plate of Bolognese, while a healthy serving, it was mediocre. The wine list had a wide variety of nationalities but a limited selection of CA Cabernets. One of least expensive Cab a $60 Chateau St Michelle from WA was fine, but they only had a single bottle. They suggested a $60 bottle of Bordeaux that was undrinkable and we opted for a $58 bottle of District 7 Cab from Monterey CA, the central coast of CA, not known for its great Cabs. The wine as just ok, it would have been acceptable at the $16 price point on Wine.com. The 3.6X up was just too much. The CA Cab labels that I recognized all started at $130 and went up well into the hundreds, again most marked up 2.5X or more. Trust me, I fully understand wine markups, regularly paid restaurant prices but these just seemed excessive. To the restaurants credit, Carlos, the maitre d stopped at the table several times to listen to our comments and ultimately comped us the bottle of District 7 wine and several cocktails. Unfortunately Terra e Mare is one and done for this family, with far too many choices for good food and good wine at reasonable prices we will not be returning to...

We made reservations for 2 for Saturday at 9PM. We arrived early, checked in and went to the bar since our table was not ready yet. We ordered drinks at the bar, Justin was incredible, made great drinks and conversation. Unfortunately, we were not seated until about 20 minutes after our reservation and when I asked for an update, the response was “eventually when someone gets up and leaves.” Once we were seated, we waited another 15 minutes before anyone came to our table because they thought we had already ordered. We had to call someone over in order for them to take our food order, not what I expected from a waterfront steakhouse. Seems disorganized.

We ordered the tempura calamari, 2 ribeyes steaks, Brussels sprouts and truffle fries. As you can see from the picture, the calamari was good but came with a drop of a white sauce that was horribly plated or presented. As if they ran out and just served it as is.

Throughout our wait for the food, no one checked on our table. Truly not the experience I was expecting from this location.

Overall, I thought the experience was okay. Steak was not as expected and lacked taste, considering this is a steakhouse. I am not picky, it was perfectly cooked but lacked flavor. Truffle fries were good but I was looking for steak or thick cut fries instead of string fries. The desserts were good, unfortunately, the crème brûlée did not have a crunchy layer of sugar and felt more like a flan.

I am not a food critic, my wife and I love food and this just did not hit the spot for us. We will not be returning to this restaurant, outside of Justin and his service at the bar, everything...
