What a wonderful place! John Day Oregon was a hidden treasure; we were here for helicopter wildfire support and it amazes me how going somewhere new (to me) can turn into a place that causes the heart & soul to yearn to visit again. We had the pleasure of getting based in John Day twice this summer, thankfully. On our first day we went to 1188 Brewing. I am relieved that the first place we attempted to have lunch at was closed, so we shuffled to 1188; the experience was superb, so It became a regular stop while we were there. The food, the drinks (when we were off duty, of course), and the service was phenomenal, especially in large part thanks to Ătoile, who really lives up to her name. She is a Star! The kitchen staff were also rock stars, churning out fabulous food including The French Dip, which was a constant choice of at least one of our crew. Also, the spicy shrimp pennĂŠ and the mac/cheese were also exceptionally good. 1188 has a wonderful beer selection as well (we loved the Affenschlag and their Geil Schmetterling-you will have to look up the translations of those two!), and their custom cocktails were truly enjoyable, my particular favorite is The Fire Line, and the Black Gold Fashion was also quite satisfying.    Read moreNicer food served here than the bar food in a typical brewery restaurant. My friend and I stopped in for an early dinner at 3:30 pm. He ordered soup of the dayâchicken & riceâand the Calabrese Salad, which was farm fresh sliced tomatoes, mozzarella slices and fresh basil drizzled with balsamic reduction. Soup was too salty but salad was excellent. I ordered the Thai Bowl which was sautĂŠed mixed vegetables and shrimp over a bed of rice with teriyaki sauce. It was excellent but the portion was small. Customer service was friendly with a smile. Behind the mask, the eyes donât lie. Went for breakfast the following morning. Ordered the veggie omelette with goat cheese. Opted for English muffin over house biscuit or toast. It came with potatoes. The entire breakfast was fabulous and plentiful. Coffee was good. Customer service...
Read moreThis place is legit. We were doing a camping trip and passed through this town. Decided to give it a try. Appetizer, the roasted brussel sprouts are a must. My husband had the jalapeno burger and enjoyed. I had the Mac and cheese with pulled pork. I have to tell you, it was a solid choice. It was the best Mac and cheese ever. They had a great selection of NA beer, which we enjoy. I'm assuming their regular beer selection is great too. The service was friendly. They were family friendly. Soup to nuts, this place was amazing. If you are going to be close, you won't be...
