Ku’uleis Gourmet — Restaurant in Kauai

Lucky to find this place open for a late lunch. We arrived in Hanapepe right at 2:30 and everywhere we wanted to try was closed (Bobbie’s closes at 2 and Japanese Grandmas Cafe closed at 2:30) so we popped in Ku’ulei out of desperation. They have a broad menu including Mac and cheese for kiddos, soups, salads, fish and chips, pastas and sandwiches and tons of yummy baked goods. Great ambiance mixing clean feeling in a historic building. They have a fun bar or tables to sit at. The Calamansi drink was refreshing and a bit like lemon and lime and not sweet at all…flavor was subtle. Ahi katsu was tender and the breading had perfect crunch. Onagi sauce was a bit overpowering. It came with a small salad and rice. Small salad was very generous size and husband thought he likely could have just had the chicken Caesar but he did enjoy the pesto shrimp and it came with really well seasoned focaccia. Henepepe is a sleepy little town where sometimes you go to eat at one place and end up at another. I'm so glad we discovered this place. Homemade and delicious. My daughter really wanted the California roll. Generally, I say no but this one is different. Good flavor. Add a bit of Wasabi to make it even better. Not boring like your typical sushi restaurant. The Mac n cheese is Super homemade with a bit of pepper. My 7 year old loves it. The best deal is the Menehune meal: Super ono delicious. Great house salad with amazing honey lemon Dijon. I was craving a sweet treat and am so glad I stopped in here. They make ice cream sandwiches with fresh baked cookies. You choose the cookie you'd like for your ice cream sandwich and they make it right then when you order. I picked the double chocolate macadamia nut cookies and it was amazing, even better than expected. The cookies were still slightly warm and were soft which was so nice with the vanilla ice cream. Often ice cream sandwiches are premade and fully frozen, this was so much better. They also had cut the sandwich in half which was perfect for sharing with my husband.
