Read moreMy wife brought me to la Foresta to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. The evening started with the host (owner?) leading us into the dining room and gesturing to a corner table while asking if that would be okay. When we agreed he went back to the host stand to retrieve menus (no wine list) leaving us standing in the middle of the room so we found our way over to the table ourselves. If that seems a picky point to start with let me divulge that I spent 45 years working in fine dining so yes I'm particular but I know what I'm talking about. In a restaurant with entrees starting at $29 the host should bring you to the table and perhaps pull out a chair. The eager and efficient busser then brought a basket of excellent bread accompanied by a zesty celery salad and a wonderful olive oil, things went downhill from there. This is the sensitive part as I don't want to hurt anyone but. There were two servers working, one a clearly experienced man and the other our server. The simple fact is the woman should never have been put in the position to fail, utterly. To the best of my wife and my recollection when she initially came to the table she just stood there looking at us, wordless, deer in the headlights, for an uncomfortable period of time until I finally inquired about a non-alcoholic beer which she had an answer for. Acknowledging my order she went on to say that there was a sea bass, swordfish and beef special but she would have to check the blackboard to tell us anything about the preparations and oh yes there were also four appetizer specials. Spoiler alert, she never did tell us about the specials, by the time she showed up again we had decided on two menu items as opposed to the three or four course meal we had intended to treat ourselves too. By this point I just wanted to get out as painlessly as possible. In retrospect we should have left after the initial impressions but I didn't want to hurt my wife's feelings. I won't go into detail about our entrees, considering the prices they were adequate but nothing more. My "wild" mushroom pasta was mostly regular old button mushrooms and the cream sauce tasted of cream with a slight hint of mushroom and cheese. The pieces of what appeared to be boiled ham (not prosciutto) contributed nothing. In all fairness I'm reasonably sure our experience would have been better with the male server but the larger point is that a restaurant with such lofty aspirations and prices had no business putting a totally inexperienced and unsupervised person in...
Read moreI have to commend the quality of this restaurant. The food is fresh, vibrant and most of all delicious. I have to add the friendliness of the staff and patrons is TOP NOTCH!! On this visit we stuck to appetizers fare. There was the bacon wrapped shrimp, the squash blossom with mozz, the broccoli raab / sausage, arancini, and the fried calamari. Also a taste of the homemade pizza. (White with fresh tomato and basil). The calamari was so light and delicious and came with a nice surprise, jalapenos. They were breaded and fried too. Absolutely delicious. I would have eaten a whole bowl or plate. The breading was so light and not at all greasy, very light and was perfect either with or without sauce. The broccoli and sausage was very good, the broccoli was fresh vibrant green, not bitter and left you wanting more. The sausage was tasty, but a little overcooked. I would next time cook about 5 to 6 mins less. The arancini was exploding with flavor, and not dried out. They were moist and great with or without the marinara. The squash flowers were made a little differently. I usually make them stuffed with ricotta, but here there was mozz substituted. Incredibly delicious. They were dipped in a cornbread like casing, but was not cornbread and extremely tasty. The only issue here was there was barely any blossom in them. That was very disappointing. The bacon wrapped spinach was also tasty, but a little too cooked, I would have shaved about 3 to 5 mins off the bake/broil at the end. But would definitely order again just a little less well done. Now for the pizza... This is a difficult one pizza is my favorite and I am very critical, but will eat almost everywhere. The pie was not well prepared like requested but, it was ok. The dough had good flavor. The tomatoes were nice ripe and flavorful, but were cut too thick, this took away from the essence. My suggestions would be to cook a little more, and thin the tomatoes. The mozz was more on the bland side but was not watery or bland. Add some garlic and basil and this is a homerun!!
The atmosphere, location, and general overall expectation exceeded my visit. I have eaten here 4 times and never left unhappy or dissatisfied.
In the area of value, it is a little more expensive than I would like to spend, but the food is great. If it was a little more affordable then Id be there more frequently. The quality and taste overall was excellent. I would definitely recommend...
