While King City isn’t often the destination for travelers on the 101, it’s a SUPER common and convenient pit stop for travel between the Bay Area and the Central Coast. There are only a handful of exits in town (if you don’t like stoplights, it’s almost perfect!) and if you’re jonesing for a little bit of comida Mexicana during your pit stop, well, friends, you’re in luck. If you want it fast, fresh, freaking delicious and fairly priced, Tacos la Potranca de Jalisco is your one stop shop to fill your belly and get back on the road to wherever you’re going.
I stumbled upon the restaurant years ago upon the recommendation of a coworker. When I arrived at lunch time I saw a Los Angeles county jail bus, CalFire fire engine and Park Service ranger vehicle parked out front and was super encouraged — especially by the LA deputies. They could eat anywhere on their long drive back to LA, and they’re chose here.
The menu is simple (tacos, burritos, quesadillas, tortas and sopes) with the usual assortment of meats, as well as a good selection of drinks — including awesome champurrado during the winter!
I’ve had pretty much everything on the menu over the years, and my go-to choices are veggie burritos, lengua quesadillas and pollo tacos. I haven’t tried the tripas, but that’s probably just my inner (and outer!) gringo shining through. I was resistant to lengua at first, too, and now’s it at the top of my list, and Potranca’s is top notch!
The salsa verde is absolutely fantastic, and if they sold it by the gallon I’d buy it and bring it home.
My only ‘gripe’ is that they don’t have chips or guac… but it’s a small place and a fryer takes up a lotta room and time to keep clean and stuff.
The staff is great, from Francisco down, and they’re running a tight and consistent ship. There are a couple tables outside if you want to eat there, and whether you stick around or bail, I bet you’re gonna be satisfied. There’s plenty of...
Read moreHave you ever hard Tripe tacos? Well if you haven't than you haven't lived yet. It is worth the 4 hour drive from so cal to Tacos La Potranca De Jalisco. This is one Taco Spot that I cannot give enough praise.
This is as good as it gets!! If you are ever driving on the 101 Freeway up the CA coast or you live in San Luis Obispol, you need to stop here. The tacos are amazing. In a small town that I have never heard of until my brother took me here, this is taco heaven. I would definitely include this place in my last meal.
There's a rare feeling of pure nirvana. When you only have a few dollars in your pocket and you want some thing good. You walk up to the talk stand and order your food. You sit outside at the lunch table and enjoy. Time just stops, no facebooking, no checking twitter updates, no yelp... Okay maybe yelp because you need be able to find this diamond in the rough.
The only negative thing I can think of is the fact that it's hundreds of miles away from here. Other than that it's absolutely perfect and I guarantee you will like it, unless maybe you are...
Read moreI wanted to try another local King City Taqueria since I make the drive through here often and this came up as the best. I probably should have stuck with something that didn't say (Bar-B-Que Pork) when referring to Al Pastor, but I assumed it was dumbed down for people. The Al Pastor I'm used to is I guess Oaxacan style and I love it. This Jalisco style isn't for me, has way too much of a tex-mex taste. I ordered it in a super burrito and everything else about it was great! The blend of veggies and rice and beans was perfect, but the pastor was few and far between. The pastor had a definitive taste of american bbq sauce and was sauteed with onions. Don't get me wrong, it was pretty good, but just didn't taste right in this. I look forward to going back and trying the other meats, especially carnitas. If you're looking for the traditional pastor flavors don't get it here, that being said I don't know how it is traditionally served in Jalisco and am used to...
