Good location and nice atmosphere. But . . . . really disappointed with the food and service. I dined here on a Friday night (August 30) and it was busy - so it took a long time to get our food. That makes sense.
I have a stomach issue and asked for the turkey burger plain and added lettuce and tomato and substituted swiss cheese for the spicy cheese. And asked for a side salad with no dressing. After a lengthy wait, the food arrived (and the wait was understandable as it was busy). The salad was fine, but the burger had barbeque sauce on it - I had asked for it plain and just couldn't eat it with the sauce. Maybe miscommunication, but I am not sure what I should have said differently as I asked for it plain and then added just what I thought I could stomache (pun intended).
The server offered to replace the bun and I noted that the sauce was actually on the burger as well as the bun. I explained that I didn't really need to eat the bun but the burger was a problem. She suggested having a new one made - and that made sense, but I asked how long it would take as my wife had her food already. She said 15 minutes or so and I said no that is too long. The server took the burger away and said she would see if the cook could do it quicker. That was the last I heard about the burger.
Over the next 20-25 minutes, my wife finished her meal and I nibbled on my salad. Finally, I asked for the bill - the turkey burger was on the bill and was not removed from the bill, which I paid and left.
Big, no HUGE, disappointment. This is the second time (out of two visits) that I was disappointed with this establishement. About a month ago I joined my wife and her sister for dinner there and ordered the turkey burger plain but they were out of turkey burgers. I do not recall my next option but they were out of that, too. So I was unable to dine that evening. The atmosphere was fine and it was neat to catch up with my sister-in-law so it was not a wasted evening, but disappointing from the food /...
Read moreFood was great- absolutely loved our loaded "Kitch chaos" fries appetizer.(That could happily be a main course for me!) The pretzel balls and beer cheese were the standard ones and good.
My husband really liked the Wrangler burger he ordered and our companions raved about the wraps. (Straight Jacket wrap & Cowboy Chicken wrap.) The waffle fries were perfectly crunchy and seasoned. If you are a grilled cheese lover, you will enjoy theirs. I got the Fireside one and it was good, but I wish I would of ordered something different. But that's on me because I rushed and didn't choose right for my personal tastes.
The beer list was quite big and the beer drinkers were kept happy with exploring trying different ones. (And they enjoyed them all.) If fruity girly drinks are more your thing, try the Hawaiian Mimosa. My companion had that and let me have a sip. It was very yummy and I almost ordered one too but I decided to save my calories for dessert.
The cookie dough cheesecake was absolutely delicious, highly recommend saving room or getting it to go! (Next time I think we will try the salted caramel one.) Our companions also tried the bread pudding, that had amazing flavor. I'm just personally not sold on it due to the texture, as we was expecting more "chunky" bread pieces. But that could be because that's all we experienced with bread puddings before.
They was super busy and the wait for our entree's was quite a while. But our waitress was fantastic and let us know ahead of time and frequently checked on us. (I don't remember names well unfortunately.) If it hadn't been for her great communication, we would of been upset over the significance time it took for the main course to arrive. But she impressed us with her friendliness and and attentiveness, so the experience was more positive than it might of...
Read moreFireside Cafe used to be in Shipshewana proper, in the Yoder White Barn Building. When we were in Shipshewana last year we ate at Fireside Cafe three times because the food was so good and the service was so warm. When I learned that they had relocated to LaGrange I was excited to try them at their new location. But we were not as pleased with the experience. My son said that the Shipshewana location was like a friendly, cheerful kid and the LaGrange location was like a cranky teenager.
The new location is much smaller, it now boasts a bar with an impressive beer list, our waitress seemed to be new because she was unfamiliar with the menu and did not know how to use the tablet ordering system. That would be perfectly fine, especially if she told us that she was new, but she did not, so our experience had quite a few hiccups. The menu seemed largely the same but the things that we ordered did not taste as good as we remember them. My Tuesday special was the Red, White and Brisket tacos and it was served almost at room temperature. The brisket was not as flavorful or as tender as I expected.
The music playing was very loud, late 70s and early 80s hard rock music. That would be okay, if that's what we went expecting, but it wasn't what we expected and it made it hard for us to talk with each other.
We really loved this restaurant last year but I do not know that we will return. But if you like loud music, half-pound burgers, fancy doctored macaroni and cheese, and heavy, high alcohol beers, you probably will love...
