Overall not a bad little place. It could use a few improvements and could be much better. The staff and patrons were all very nice.
My wife and I stopped to eat breakfast one Sunday morning. The hostess said there will be a wait. I asked how long. She hesitated with a long Hummmmm as her eyeballs scurried the walls and ceiling. Finally, she responded with an, "I don't really know, maybe like 20 minutes." I looked at my cell phone to note the time and noticed that my signal was very poor. I asked her if they have WiFi. She laughed as she said, "No, this building is like really really old; there's no way there's WiFi here."
To endure the wait, we took a short stroll down the sidewalk to window shop. I found an engraved sign on the wall that said building construction was complete in 1981, which contradicted what the hostess led us to believe. We made our way to the end of the closed shops and back as we finished the wait. While we were sitting in front of the front door and getting close to the 20 minutes, we noticed a party of 6 being seated who we saw walk in as we started our walk down the sidewalk. I went inside to ask if we were called while we were down the way. The young lady ran her finger down the chicken scratch of names on a notebook and found mine above some names that were already scratched out. Thinking that she must have already called my name and we missed it, I asked her if she had been looking for us. She told me that she had not called my name but there was a table being cleared for us now.
We sat and were greeted by a waitress who appeared to be around my age (a hand full of years older than the building). I asked her if there was WiFi and laughed as I explained what the hostess told me about how old the building was. She agreed with the hostess that the building was very old and ensured me that there could not be WiFi in a building this old. It made me lose a little confidence in the staff.
At any rate, we ordered our drinks. The menu displayed cold coffee in mocha and a couple other flavors. My wife ordered a cold coffee as she pointed to the mocha listing. She was later served a clear plastic cup that is usually used for water filled to the brim with ice and black coffee. We laughed about it and explained to the waitress there was a misunderstanding as I lost a little more confidence. However, the drink was quickly replaced as the waitress apologized. We ordered our breakfast, received, it and ate it. It was very good, like real homemade food opposed to something that was rushed from a large bulk order company.
I didn't like where we were sitting. Our table was in front of the register. Throughout our meal, people were constantly standing around our table waiting to pay their bill. While we were waiting for or bill, the buss boy dropped a cup or something on the ground semi-close to us. It soiled the floor with some liquid. He cleaned and moped it very quickly. He then used a rag to dry the floor. The rag appeared to be the same type that he also used to wipe the tables. After wiping the floor, he put the rag back on the counter with the other rags for the tables. I then lost all confidence.
All and all, it was a very nice environment with very nice people. The food was outstanding, and the service was pretty decent. I recommend either adding WiFi service or educating the staff on how to respond to the lack there of, a better understanding of the menu options, and a little training on seating time management, and cleanliness. Despite these mishaps, the good outweighed the bad, and we had a a very pleasant visit. I would visit again if in the area and recommend it to friends who may be...
Read moreLooking for a new breakfast place, hoping to find a "regular" place, we came upon Café Lago. It's small and although they have an outdoor patio, this day was quite chilly and we wanted to dine inside... and so did everyone else. All the tables were full, but there was no one else waiting for a table at that time. There doesn't seem to be any sign up sheet/list, so stay near by and keep an eye out for people leaving their table. The staff are certainly busy but just seemed odd that no one would talk to you until you are at a table.
We didn't wait long for our table and once seated, we were immediately greeted and our drink orders were taken. The staff are very friendly and personable. It was our first time so we were just looking over the menu and deciding between breakfast or lunch. So, we decided on one of each.
I had the "Jake's Eggs" and my friend had a turkey sandwich. We also had a slice of the French Toast. And to drink I had the iced tea. For starters, the tea is freshly brewed. You really have to appreciate a place that will brew their tea instead of using instant. We didn't have to wait very long before the food came out. The plates were full and the food was fresh and hot.
For starters, the French Toast is made from raisin Texas toast and it looks like something you would see on the menu. The pictures always look better than the food, but this looked amazing! And looks were deceiving; I realize French Toast can seem pretty basic, but you don't want to pass this up even if it's just to share a slice or two with someone.
The Jake's Eggs is just scrambled eggs with a lot added in. It's probably really good if you are very hungry but not if you want something light. I had the hash browns and tortilla. It's a decent egg meal but not something I would order regularly. The sandwich was kind of plain. The turkey was fresh and came with corn chips.
So, overall it's a nice place but not a place I would pick as a "regular". They are very nice and it's a quaint place, good prices. But the food was just okay. I would consider giving it another try in the future and see if the food...
Read moreMy friend and I drove almost an hour to have breakfast at this establishment. We were warmly welcomed and asked to sit ourselves. Nothing out the ordinary, we chose to sit outside on the patio.Greeted warmly by the waitress, we ordered our food, she brings it out, no problem. It’s important to note we are the only black customers. We do not feel at all out of place. Once our food came out, my friend requests some salsa for her omelette. That must have triggered the waitress because we are yet to fathom what else it could have possibly been. She put her hands on her hips and breathed out heavily, visibly annoyed. I immediately told my friend that she was possiblybusy and overwhelmed and for her not to take it personally. With my order, I got a smoothie. I realized that I would not be able to finish my smoothie and asked for a to go cup. Again she expressed annoyance at the request with her body language. She threw her hand up in the air and said I’ll bring you a to go cup you can pour it in the yourself. If management pulls up the camera, they will see. We remained calm, thanked her, even chuckled about it, and kept on with trying to enjoy our meal and our trip to Austin. Since I barley ate my food, not because I was upset with how we were being treated by this person. I requested a to go box. She could barely contain herself with anger. We paid, thanked her again with out most dazzling smile and left her a huge tip.
We are really nice kind hearted girls, our requests were not unreasonable, any guesses on why we were treated like this? I’m calling management in morning but I think I know...
