Finally had a chance to check out this local landmark in Lighthouse Point. Caps place has been around since the 1920’s and I can see why. Be sure to make a reservation in advance, there are only about 12 tables. To get to the restaurant you have to take a water taxi, It’s about a 3 minute smooth ride. If it is a rainy day, I do not recommend but they do have umbrellas if needed. The place does look like a hole in the wall but we all know the best food comes from places like this. We arrived early so we could spend some time at the bar. No fancy cocktails, this is a real old school bar. When our reservation was ready we headed to the hostess stand in the other building. Our server brought some delicious warm bread and explained the specials along with other items not listed on the menu. Note, the menu specifically says “Good food takes time, all food is prepared to order”. We started with the blackened Mahi bites. So fresh, tasted like it was caught that morning. I also got a house salad, the creamy garlic dressing is to die for. For entrees we both got the crab cakes. They were full of lump crab meat with a touch of dill flavor. They included a side of green beans that were definitely canned but they seasoned well & horseradish mashed potatoes that I really enjoyed. For dessert we saved room for the Lime Pie. It was very tart but the sweet graham cracker crust balanced it out. Overall we had a great experience.

Arrived at 8pm on Friday for our reservation. Stepped into the bar and were immediately and rudely told to go to the restaurant, the bar was closed. The bar smelled bad anyway, so I guess that was fine. At the table we were given literature to read up on the “history” of the location and a long list of dead celebrities who had visited in the past. We were told no one else the quality of “hearts of palm” salad that they do. It was ordered $20 and had no real taste. It was passed around the table of 6, but not finished. I had the scallops which they “no longer pan sear,” so I chose broiled. They were overcooked and tough; I couldn’t eat them. The only sides offered were green beans w/ Parmesan butter sauce, but they were cold, and mashed potatoes or fries. The fried shrimp were fine, but not served hot. Hubs had the fried sampler platter which was delivered several minutes after everyone else’s meal, but it was served hot and he enjoyed it. Just because the place is 97 years old, and used to have a good reputation, it did t live up to expectations that night. The little boat ride over was novel, but skip this place. Take a River Taxi to 15th street Fisheries, enjoy the food, the staff and the view.

For 20, maybe 30 years I've heard and read about this place. Finally I got my friend to actually drive me to it. It's authentic. I loved the atmosphere, it smells of old wood, not unpleasant, decorated with funky old Florida primitive paintings, nautical bric-a-brac and ancient framed newspaper and magazine clippings. The menu is pleasingly short, not overburdened with choices. Our party of three ate very well with high-quality ingredients. The seafood platter had some of the sweetest-tasting scallops I've eaten and some nicely sized shrimp. The crab cakes were outstanding, big pieces of crabmeat nestled in a delicious breading. The swamp cabbage (heart of palm) salad was terrific, served with a seasoned mayonnaise. Our outstanding waiter came by showing us the actual heart of the palm tree from which our salads were made. The key lime pie was on point, not too sweet with a lovely tangy tartness on a slightly crisp crust. The bar was closed, but they did pour me a scotch to begin and kept the Heinekens coming during my meal. An altogether a memorable meal, including a free boat ride!

We had a party of (6) attending this dining experience. A few of us had already read the reviews so we came prepared but open minded. After parking and ferried to the island we checked in a half hour early for our 6pm reservation. Granted, the place was empty except for a few patrons the owner greeted us with a stern "your reservation isn't until 6pm you're going to have to wait." OK, fine, we'll spend a little time and money at the bar. Obviously, the bar tender and the lady seating us were related or went to the same school of customer service and manners because every thing we asked for she said "this isn't that type of bar." Plainly, to the point, and with some I don't want to be here or deal with you attitude.

We were seated a few minutes early for our reserved time and was greeted by our waitress. I wish I remembered her name because her personality and service made up for the the sisters who failed customer service 101.

Enough of the negativity (for now) and I'll get to the positive aspects of our experience. First off, the history of the place is amazing. A prohibition-era speakeasy/restaurant on a small island only reached by ferry is awesome! The place looked like nothing muched had changed from the 1920's. Combine that with all the famous and infamous patrons who have dined here make it that much cooler!

Every dish I tasted from the crab cakes, bacon-wrapped scallops, and hearts of palm salad, to my entry, yellow tail snapper scampy style with coconut mashed potatoes was amazing. The other 5 people in my group were also impressed with their dishes. Great flavor combinations, fresh seafood, and prepared well.

Back to the negative...OK so we were a little loud. Not 20-something on spring break party-down loud, but laughing having a good time 40-50 year old loud. The same lady who sat us (owner) shhsh'd us. OK, whatever, maybe we were a little loud, but still... when leaving some were giving hugs as departing and the same lady said you can't do that here because of Covid. What?!?

Bottom line is, this restaurant has amazing food, great history and atmosphere and intracoastal view, and a great wait staff. However, the owners and bar tender tend to lessen the experience. Furthermore, there is so much potential to do a little work around the grounds to have outdoor seating and just cleanup for a truly spectacular dining experience. Unfortunately, I don't see this place lasting too much longer due to the way it is run unless there are some management changes and a little TLC on...

Great historical location if you're looking for some drinks. Had a classic up north like in Wisconsin or Minnesota camp Lodge. Feel this is your up north woodsy place to go to for a drink! I highly suggest you pass on the meals though! The reason being the meal menu is limited but priced too high for the offerings. Everything was just so so we did some appetizers and they were so so! So pass on the meals they're overpriced. You can get a decent meal in fort Lauderdale pompano or Boca for the same plate charge that they charge you here four just the up north woodsy feel heck no front end lady. The greeter was very rude and shortcomings. They shut the bar down early. Well it was a solo night. We were there with one other couple. It rained a little. My gosh. It rains in Florida everyday. What's the big deal?? The relative that runs the boat to go to the so-called Island that's not an island. You can drive over to the place I don't know. I guess it gives you that 1920s Al Capone BS feeling well. He's not very happy. Probably needs some good antidepressants or to start drinking again. Maybe you should have a bottle of Jack Daniels or Southern comfort on the boat that brings you over? We enjoyed it. When the pompano Beach water taxi would drop us off personally and pick us up then we didn't have to deal with that! Well covid took them out! So if you're looking for a great place to take some visitors or if you haven't been there to get that up north woodsy feel go to the bar. Have some drinks when they open up and then pass on the meal. You can go right across the waterway at the marina and get a meal over price similar to cap's place! Again, I hate to post a negative review or so so review, but I'm telling the truth again for the limited menu. Everything should have a wow factor but when you're out of this item that you wanted or even the appetizers are so so you pass on the main course! Cute place to walk around. Look at the pictures. See the tilting walls, the leaning and sagging parts and the woodsy feel. But that's about it. Spend your money on the drink. Take a hike! Save...

I recently had the unfortunate experience of visiting Cap Place with a group of friends. I must say, it was one of the most disappointing evenings I've had in a long time. The main reason for our dissatisfaction was the mistreatment we received from the elderly redheaded bartender at the bar.

From the moment we walked in, it felt as if we were a burden to the bartender. Her attitude was beyond rude and unwelcoming. It seemed as though she had no interest in providing good customer service or ensuring a pleasant experience for her patrons.

First and foremost, her lack of professionalism was evident. She constantly ignored our requests for drinks, leaving us waiting at the bar for an unacceptable amount of time. When she finally acknowledged us, she did so with an eye roll and a dismissive tone. It was clear that she had no interest in serving us or making us feel valued as customers.

Additionally, her demeanor towards our group was consistently condescending. She made snarky comments and sarcastic remarks that were unnecessary and uncalled for. It felt as though she was deliberately trying to ruin our evening and drive us away from the establishment.

Furthermore, her lack of knowledge and expertise in mixology was evident. The drinks she prepared were poorly made and lacked any creativity or finesse. It was disheartening to see such a lack of passion and skill in a supposedly reputable establishment.

Due to the bartender's terrible behavior, we made the decision to leave after only having drinks at the bar. We chose not to have dinner at the main restaurant, as we did not want to risk further mistreatment from the staff.

Overall, our experience at Cap Place was deeply disappointing and marred by the rude and unprofessional behavior of the elderly redheaded bartender. It is truly disheartening to see such a lack of respect and customer service in the hospitality industry. I would strongly advise others to consider alternative options when looking for a place to dine and...
