Hands down the best sushi in Northern Michigan! Sushi so good that you feel sad after you finish the last bite because now it's gone and that's a darn travesty. š„²
My favorite roll is the Seven Spice Tuna. The spice rub is so smoky with just the perfect amount of spice, and then shaved citrus on top is better than icing on cake. š£š
I'm also a big fan of the Dragon, Golden Tuna, King Kombu, and Gojira special rolls. Honestly, I haven't had anything there that I wasn't totally enthusiastic about--even the miso soup is the best I've ever had. And quite frankly, I wouldn't pay these prices anywhere else but at The Dojo it is worth every single penny.
The people are just as amazing as the food. The owner Brent is super friendly, happy to chat, and calls you by name. His dad is equally awesome--the family aspect makes me feel really good about spending my money here.
Honestly the dining room isn't my favorite (the chairs aren't super comfy) so I suppose I'll have to give it 5 stars instead of 6. š BUT they're super conscientious about food allergies and are willing to change their cutting boards and everything if you need to avoid cross-contamination; all you have to do is ask.
Disclaimer: These are photos from The Dojo's Facebook page, which I happily subscribe to for their drool-worthy photography. I was going to post my own pics, but then I realized that Brent never posted these beauties to Google and figured I ought to...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe had high hopes for The Dojo, we saw all the 5 star reviews and were excited to give it a try. The people who work here are extremely friendly and welcoming. When we went, the restaurant was full, so they are obviously doing well. But for anyone who has had high quality sushi, it is a disappointment.
The restaurant smells fishy upon entry, which is usually a telltale sign that the ingredients are not at the right temperature.
The quality and preparation of the rice was below par. It was undercooked, dry and overly firm. We tried many rolls, and regardless of what roll we ordered, they were just not very flavorful, they tasted neutral and bland. The wasabi was not grated, it seemed pre-processed as if from a tube, and I expect more from a sushi restaurant that is selling some of its rolls for $20.
We love sushi, we have been to Japan numerous times and we have had some outstanding sushi there. We also know that it is difficult to get quality sushi ingredients in Northern Michigan. We are not sushi snobs either⦠we often eat grocery store sushi from Olesonās. I expected the sushi at The Dojo to fall somewhere between our meals in Japan and grocery store sushi. Sadly, this is worse than your local grocery store sushi. We would have given it two stars on the food alone, but the people running the restaurant were so kind and so earnest that we gave it an extra star because the staff was so...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreHighly recommend. I adored their dining facility as it embodied the true experience of sushi being made right in front of you. I was very pleased with the service and communication. Sushi was great! Side note: I went towards the later end of the day and I saw something very unique compared to other restaurants up in TC. There were only two people working. Of these two, I saw a young gentleman behind the counter excited to share his passion for sushi with the community. He was very focused on ensuring that his customers were receiving the best ingredients; cut and roll that he could provide. The second I believe was his father (the sweetest gentleman), there to lend a helping hand while giving his love and support to his son during the opening of The Dojo. If you are an advocate for local dining, please put this...
