I had been wanting to try this place for a long time, and I'm so happy I finally got to. I'd never had Sri Lankan food, and it was different from anything I've ever had before. The flavors are indescribable, and incredible. Everything tasted fresh. My expectations were high, and they were still exceeded by a marathon. I don't have the words to describe how stunning the food was. I had the vegetable hopper. It was a plate of noodles and a spicy vegetable salad (? I'm not sure what it would be called but it was good), with three side dishes to put on the noodles- a coconut soup, a green-bean vegetable dish, and a squash curry. I went with my dad, and he ordered the same as I did, but his came with a dahl- like food instead of squash. I think it's really cool how you can order the same thing and still get some variation, while also being able to have confidence that everything is delicious- my dad and I shared our side dishes, so I can confirm that the dahl was amazing. The people running the restaurant were helpful and kind, and the inside of the restaurant while small was impeccably clean.
The food was quite spicy, which I loved, but if you don't like spicy food you might not like it as much. The spice is different from other spicy foods that I've had, though, so if there's just a particular brand of spice that you dislike, you should still give this a try. Also, it's a vegetarian-friendly place, which is always...
Read moreFirst time trying Sri Lankan cuisine and we were very impressed! We love Indian and Nepali food so we wanted to try something else from South Asia - Apey Kade is the perfect place to introduce you to Sri Lankan food. Do not hesitate to do what we did when visiting: we told the man behind the counter (I assume he was the owner) that weâd never had Sri Lankan food before, and for him to give us his suggestions. He took care of us and gave us his picks for best items on the menu: chicken lamprais, beef string hoppers, hot tea and falooda! He was very kind and made our experience that much more enjoyable!
All I can say is he knew what he was talking aboutâŚthe food was awesome! So unique and different from other cuisines weâve tried - I would highly recommend the lamprais or string hopper dishes! We would get them again!! And the rose falooda was excellent as well as the tea. Everything was a success. Give this wonderful local restaurant your business and prepare for a culinary experience you wonât...
Read moreI saw some raving reviews about Apey Kade in multiple articles ranking Valley restaurants so I had to give it a try. It was also my first time trying Sri Lankan cuisine. Let me tell you, this place is a hidden gem.
You may be put off by itâs appearance at first. It looks like a hole in the wall with dim lighting. I wouldnât recommend eating in the restaurant itself. Take it to go if you donât live far.
That said though, the food is outrageously tasty. The hooper, which resembled the flavor of a crape and shape of a bowl, paired perfectly with the broth of the stewed chicken. I could eat three bowls of that chicken and spiced broth it was that good! I also ordered some pastries that had a spicy onion flavor, a great addition to your meal.
I promise you this place is worth a try. If you are unsure what to order, ask the nice couple behind the counter and they will help you. I canât wait to try more things here...
