Restaurant stole my credit card and refused to let me leave The events that transpired last night are not only deeply embarrassing for the establishment but also highlight how completely unacceptable the treatment from their management was.
We were seated around the side of the restaurant directly above the water. When it was time to pay our bill, I provided my credit card and placed it in the bill presenter which was then handed to our server. In a freak accident our server stumbled and dropped the bill presenter, and my credit card fell through the slats of wood and into the water.
Our server was immediately apologetic and offered to get one of their managers. The first manager to arrive did not introduce herself, she only made a half-hearted attempt to shine a flashlight in the water to see if the card somehow didn’t sink. In less than five minutes she essentially said that “It’s high tide and there’s nothing we can do.” Immediately following that statement was not an apology but rather the beginning of a long line of questioning regarding how I planned on paying now. Within minutes it became abundantly clear that the restaurant’s priorities skewed towards profit rather than attempting to rectify LOSING my main method of payment while I am on vacation.
I then asked to speak to another manager on staff considering there was no indication that a solution was going to be offered. The next manager to approach attempted to speak with my guests about securing a form of payment for the meal. After making a joke regarding my card “going swimming” and going as far to say, “Things happen and it’s high tide so there’s nothing we can do.” And then attempting to pry information from the other two guests about where I was staying.
I offered to go to the bank the next day to see if they could replace my card and then return to pay my bill as I did not have back up payment methods at the time. The second manager threatened that I was “not allowed to leave the premises or they will consider it theft.” At this point I am appalled and frustrated by the lack of decorum and accountability from management. Every time I asked what I was expected to do now that my only payment method was sitting at the bottom of a body of water never to be seen again, I received almost identical answers that shifted the responsibility from them to myself. They also requested to hold onto my driver’s license with no cause and refused to return it.
Other tables of patrons were becoming uncomfortable with the escalation from management and offered to cover our bill to resolve this. A very kind man quite literally saved us by paying for our bill, BUT he had said to the different managers multiple times that he will cover the cost, and they adamantly ignored him and continued to escalate the situation by saying “No, she has to pay.”
Then in another act of unprofessionalism the second manager instructed my dinner guests to “go get me because we need to speak to her” as I was a few feet away in the parking lot and introduced a third manager that further escalated the situation. The third manager was then the one to threaten to call the police after my frustration had hit its limit.
The only reason we were able to leave is due to the kindness of other patrons that paid our bill. Not a single one of the THREE managers apologized for this incident. They did not offer to comp anything on the bill. At an alleged “premier seafood place” where our bill did not include any alcohol, specialty items, or expensive seafood the offer to comp never even entered the conversation.
All of this is to say that I was embarrassed and appalled by the clear desperation to not lose out on a bill. I am embarrassed that our young server displayed more respectful manners than those who are entrusted to handle difficult situations. Many other patrons were speaking up on my behalf and indicating the absurdity of the situation, for those people I am truly grateful. I felt completely and utterly gaslit about the entire situation from start to finish. 0/10 Would...
Read moreI rarely leave reviews, but I would hate to see others spending their hard earned money on a poor experience, especially in this economy.
For starters, there are 2 different restaurants - 2 Mile Restaurant and Bar and The Crab House. There are different menus and we wanted king crab legs. The sign outside had an arrow pointing to the left for crab legs (2 Mile Restaurant) and an arrow pointing at the right for crabs (The Crab House). After waiting in line for sometime for 2 Mile Restaurant and being seated, we realized we were not in the right restaurant. So, back out to The Crab House we went to stand in a different line. This is also confusing as there is a host stand, but when you walk up to it, they direct you to a different window to check-in. After waiting in that line and checking in with that person, we were put in line with the host we originally approached. So, be prepared to stand in 2 lines for one restaurant which just seems like a senseless added step.
Once seated, our waitress came right over and took our drink orders. I ordered a spicy pineapple margarita. The drink itself was very tasty, but it was $14 for maybe an 8 ounce plastic cup that was mostly ice. I expected more for $14.
It took our waitress a while to return with our drinks and to get our food order, but we were understanding because she was extremely busy. When my fiance and I went to order the king crab legs, we were told they were sold out. Our waitress then relayed that they haven’t had king crab legs all season. This was the sole reason we came here. It would’ve been nice for the owners to make this known on their website or even on the menu, but I have little doubt it was done by accident. Still trying to be understanding and not difficult, we decided to order the bacon wrapped scallops for an appetizer and Dungeness crab legs as our meals. The scallops were extremely mushy and had little to no taste other than the bacon wrapped around them. For about $60 per meal, we each received 2 clusters with 5 legs on each cluster. I have eaten a lot of crab legs in my day, so you can believe me when I tell you, these were old. They were flavorless and overcooked, as if they had been cooked, frozen, and re-cooked.
Apart from serving our food, I believe our waitress checked on us one time, but we were never offered a refill on our drinks or anything else to drink for that matter. She was extremely pleasant, though.
The worst part was that a child in another family had accidentally thrown away a retainer. While the heroic bus boy went digging in multiple trash cans to find it, and ultimately did, much to the delight of that family, he emptied several trash cans only feet away from our table and right next to the bar window. Once he found the retainer, he was high fiving the family members, but I never saw him wash his hands…NEVER!!
I realize restaurant owners are not in business to lose money, but this seems to be over-the-top. There are tables and chairs squeezed in every nook and cranny, uncomfortably close to others, and a wait staff that is spread very thin. When food is past its prime, it should be discarded. For the amount you’re being charged, the crab legs should be fresh every time. The drinks should be bigger, too, for the price. To me, these restaurants scream greed! Money over experience and quality.
We aren’t afraid to spend money on good food. This was not that. This was little more than a SYSCO restaurant. While I’m not knocking SYSCO or those types of restaurants, to have the audacity to charge what this place is charging for frozen food should be a crime. For what this place costs, there are absolutely better places to go in the area. Do yourself a favor and find...
Read moreUpdate: August 4, 2024: This WAS our favorite place for the family dinner out during vacation. After our most recent visit on July 18th, that's the last time we'll be going there.
We arrived shortly after 5pm. Though there was a line, we were pleasantly surprised that we were seated quickly and got a table outside. It was dinner rush so it was very busy. We understand that, especially having service industry background. We ordered Heinekens and it arrived warm. Forget finding your server in time to show it was warm, but figured, I'll deal and just order another drink. I ordered a cocktail and that arrived 30 mins after I ordered it. The apps were already on the table. Normally, I love the food here, but it was terrible that night. Maybe new chef? Service was slow, but I figured it was just busy. But the food- disappointing. We got the crab cheese wontons, the clams casino, device, and it was bland. I ordered the surf and turf for dinner and mine didn't come with the fries as requested, and the lobster tail came stuffed with crabmeat. I was starving and she didn't bother to come by and check anyways. As we were eating, there was a family diagonal from us. I watched 3 of the 4 family members get their dinner. After 20 minutes, the 4th family member, a teenage son, still didn't get his. It seemed he was waiting for crabs bc he was holding a mallet. His father finally got up and approached a manager to complain and within 5 mins, he finally got his dinner. 25 minutes of waiting for his AYCE crabs!
Our dinners here during vacation is usually the highlight to end the week. We aren't picky or demanding customers, but maybe it was a new server, or a bad server, or just new kitchen staff. The experience that night after numerous years of coming here was enough for my husband and I to decide to pick a different place next time.
We come here at least once a year during family vacation for our big family dinner. It's a pandemic summer and we decided to come to an early dinner, not knowing what to expect. Upon arrival by 5pm on a Thursday night there was already a nice line. We were in line for about 15 minutes were pleasantly surprised to get a table right away for 4 upon reaching the hostess stand. Our server, Jenn, was so attentive and the food never...
