Service portion of review: We ordered a pancake breakfast with two sausage links and two eggs, an extra order of sausage, a cookie bar & a blueberry scone, all to-go. The wait time was only maybe 2-3mins than they said. :) When I got to my car, the only thing in my bag was the pancake breakfast. I went back in and waited to talk to the the host, who apologized and showed me where to grab a cookie bar and he went and got my scone. Then I got to the car again and realized we weren't given any plastic forks, knife, spoon or napkins. Since we were planning to picnic at the nearby park, this was a problem. I went back in again and again waited to talk to the host, who showed me where to get the plasticware :) It was a weekday morning during summer break, and they were pretty busy ofcourse...Everybody seems to be constantly low staffed.(which maybe they were, idk). Just trying to be understanding about how my order pick up went.
Now for the food portion of review: Pancake breakfast looked absolutely fabulous! The sausages were good. The eggs I had ordered medium were a little under medium and had some tiny bits of green, which I found unappetizing since we didn't order anything green (the random bits of green are another reason I wonder if they might be understaffed for how busy they were). I was thankful we don't have any herb allergies and that the bits were few and easy to wipe away. The pancakes were surprisingly...bad :/ They were strangely flavored and textured. Not like any pancake I've ever had at anytime in my 43 years of life and I won't be ordering them again. The best way I can explain it is something was "off". They almost tasted unsafe to eat, it was weird. We had to force ourselves to try and finish them but ended up throwing away most of one pancake. This pancake breakfast was $14 and for the amount of food, if the pancakes had been good, I would say this is a good value for a nice breakfast, but they were definitely not. Sad to say. I'm not sure what happened but as I'm not a regular and just went there trying to vary my support for a local small business, I did my part and will now stick with getting pancakes from my regular local small business pancake spot, or even take my kids to McDonald's for better pancakes for that matter, but hopefully I just went on an off day and nobody else will experience that kind of culinary wierdness.
The blueberry scone was huge and it's container included both strawberry jam & 2 pads of butter :) We ended up using 1 butter pads on the pancakes (which came with no butter). We all thought this scone was very good! Full of berries and the "condiments" of sorts would have been plenty, had our pancakes come with their own butter.
The cookie bar was good and one of my boys really enjoyed that. :)
The amounts of food were generous, as I have always heard and the pastries were good, so if I lived very close and liked to go out often, I'm sure I'd give them another chance, especially with their reputation. That said, like I already mentioned, I have a preferred breakfast spot.
Caution: If you are looking for the best value, make sure to avoid ordering sides like for example, I ordered a side of sausage and for that one sausage patty, it was $6 (close to half the price of another pancake breakfast). So it's better to just order another meal that includes sausage (maybe french toast or something,) and save the excess, unless leftovers are a...
Read moreToday, it has been 48 years, 7 months, and 4 days since I was born on August 20, 1975. In all that time, I have lived in Snohomish County and I have never been to the #MaltbyCafe. (I KNOW THAT'S UNBELIEVABLE, BUT TRUE!) But today is different because I can now say I've been to the Maltby Cafe and I have acquired my first #MaltbyCafecinnamonroll with the guidance from the food experts known as my Momma and my Papa. Thanks for spending time with me and having breakfast together. My Roughneck Potatoes & Eggs with toast were delicious.
MY REVIEW...
We got lucky and it was only a 20-minute wait at 8:50 a.m., When we were leaving at 10:15 a.m., they were saying... 1-hour wait time for a table. It was an incredibly cozy atmosphere in the restaurant. Everyone was dressed casually in their Sunday comfortable clothes, and every table was full of conversations. It was a loud room packed full of people, making me feel right at home as if I was at one of our family's Thanksgiving or Christmas get-togethers. Definitely a unique place with huge servings. What was unusual and caught me off guard was how hot the food was. I appreciate hot food, and my Roughneck Potatoes & Eggs, which were country-fried red Potatoes, bacon (I 86’d the mushrooms), but got onions, topped with Jarlsberg Swiss cheese. Served with two extra-large eggs and toast with what I’m guessing was homemade jam. It was actually steaming hot when I started digging into it, and it was super delicious. My cinnamon roll that I got for taking home is sitting in a mind-blowing ½ inch of frosting. Also notable was the waitress’s attitude—she was fun, lively, and easy to talk to. You could even classify her as having a bubbly attitude.
Not that the Maltby Cafe needs my recommendations, but I highly recommend going to the MALTBY CAFE for OUTSTANDING HOT FOOD, HUGE CINNAMON ROLLS, AND A STAFF WHO LOVE THEIR CUSTOMERS AND THEIR JOB!
WELL DONE, MALTBY CAFE, FOR SERVING AN UNBELIEVABLE NUMBER OF MEALS THAT YOU HAVE PREPARED AND SERVED HOT, WHILE KEEPING AN OUTRAGEOUS WORD-OF-MOUTH REPUTATION, IN THE 35TH (GOING ON TO BE THE 36TH) YEAR, SINCE YOUR OPENING DAY,...
Read moreWe visited here twice. First time I got the chef salad. The portion was massive, however you had to cut the toppings yourself to make it even somewhat possible to eat. By the time I got my food cut up most of the rest of my party was almost done eating. I ended up taking over half of my meal home as everyone knows it’s awkward when everyone is waiting on you. So lesson learned the first time. Don’t order salad. Service was good the first time we went. Second time we visited I ordered the country eggs Benedict. The eggs were cooked to perfection. There was very little ham, the biscuits were absolutely soggy by the time the plate made it to me and the hollandaise was lacking any and all flavor. They also served the eggs virtually on top of my potatoes. If I wanted eggs covered potatoes I would have ordered gag covered potatoes. I also ordered my potatoes EXTRA EXTRA crispy and I received soggy lukewarm potatoes. I ended up not eating any of the potatoes and took them home to crisp up myself. Also, service was significantly lacking and rude the last time we went. We had no idea who our server was so we asked a passing waitress if we could order and she gave us attitude saying she was coming. When an individual in our party went to order their omelette the menu stated you could choose between bread or biscuit. They opted for bread. She said in a very annoyed and elevated tone, “YEP, that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be!” Like we were wasting her time stating what we wanted. Overall, her service, and the food, left a poor taste in our mouth. Place can also get really loud at certain times of day and could use a good cleaning. Super expensive for what you get.
Also. We ordered the cinnamon roll to go. Big mistake. It is so dry it must have been from several days ago. The frosting seems like warmed up and diluted pillsbury frosting. There also appears to be raisins in it. Perhaps I overlooked the description of the cinnamon roll, but I only saw walnuts listed as an ingredient. Save yourself the hassle and disappointment and try a different dining...
