Yum! So while traveling in from DC back to where I live in the Shenandoah Valley I thought I’d love to have some pulled pork barbecue. Well, I looked it up on Google maps and found this amazing place. I didn’t realize it was going to be a 10 mile trip off the interstate but I figured what the heck let’s try it.
Well I’m sure glad I did. It was exactly the food I was looking for. Truly I think ethically it’s a weird thing that we eat animals, but I was raised eating them so it’s a hard habit to break. Wanting pulled pork that was absolutely succulent and flavorful was my goal and I found it here.
Grace was the nice young lady, who was my waitress and she was more than accommodating. She had knowledge about the food, and made some very good suggestions. At first I thought she was a bit timid because she was so quiet and for the past two months I have been in Sicily with a batch of crazy family.
Well, the food was absolutely perfect. The salad was perfect topped with a succulent pulled pork. I tried of the gold rush sauce, and it was very good. A little bit sweet for me but still good.
The balsamic vinegar was very nice. And I have to say even though I try not to eat sugar I really liked the corn muffin that came with the salad. The fresh brewed coffee was perfect. Now I’ll head home happy that I took a 20 mile detour to find someplace that I will bring others to. I really appreciated the outdoor seating. Even though it’s close to a parking lot quiet and felt very comfortable.
I must say that earlier today I was thinking of a negative review, but about two years overdue to a company that did a bait and switch. I better get to that so nobody else gets taken in. Google maps is a great resource and I love being part of the community that...
Read moreI can't say enough about this place...Great food; great people, relaxed atmosphere.
But the burgers...
I know, I am some sort of communist talking about a burger from a BBQ joint, but...this is a GREAT BURGER! I have had The BULL burger and the Shack burger. Both are cooked to order and both are incredibly delicious. The bacon has always been present, crispy, and flavorful.
The Bull burger comes topped with chopped brisket, swiss cheese, A-1 aioli, and bacon. This burger is the real deal; not just some 'Let's see how high we can pile the meat on'. It's a purposeful burger and all of the flavors and textures are present. Best part is that you can eat the whole thing in one sitting and not feel like you won't be able to move for the next 2 days.
The Shack burger is a classic burger for the purists, but no less flavorful and it serves it's purpose as well. It is a little but lighter (no additional meat toppings) but it occupies it's own space very well and is very satisfying (I like my burgers cooked medium and they are still dripping with that juicy rendering).
Let's not forge the bun! This brioche bun is soft, light, toasted, and perfect for these burgers. The bun does not get soaked, it holds all of the tasty bites in place, and compliments these burgers perfectly.
I have had the other items that Hog Shack offers, and they are out of this world (did I mention the Collard Greens? You know what I'm saying!) but if it is Tuesday, you had better bet I will be there for lunch getting my Tuesday special,...
Read moreWe were excited to try this new place as we LOVE BBQ! First, they didn't have what we wanted - they were out of the chicken leg quarters that we wanted to go with the ribs for the double meat platter so we ended up paying same price for literally 2 tiny chicken wings (instead of chicken leg quarter) and a 1/4 rib rack. Then they messed up our order and we didn't realize til we got home that a side was missing (we should have double checked before we left but we saw the employee putting the containers in our bag behind the counter and she kept looking at the receipt, pulling containers out and back in and looked to be double checking everything so we thought we were good). As for the food, the sweet potato fries were DELICIOUS! And the ribs had excellent smoke flavor and the Hog sauce we added on top was good, but the ribs were dry and REALLY hard to cut, like using a steak knife to cut them apart because it was so dry. The 2 chicken wings were awful...dry, no flavor. The cole slaw was just ok - had large chunks of celery in it which we found odd. The corn elote side was good. We ordered onion rings as the 4th side which we never got so can't comment on those. Overall, disappointed with 1) not having what we wanted in stock 2) missing an item from our order that we paid for 3) meat being so dry and hard 4) none of the employees wearing masks inside, just shows me they don't care about hygiene or spreading germs. We'll be going back to The Bone in Historic...
