Nan's New Orleans Cafe & Poboys — Restaurant in Mandeville

Stopped at this place on a whim and it is SO GOOD!

We weren't expecting anything but wanted cheese fries, and saw this place on Google Maps.

Was a fantastic split second decision.

Our waitress was wonderful and the vibe in the place is really nice.

The food though. Absolutely delicious.

Starting with the sweet tea. They make good sweet tea here. If you are a sweet tea aficionado, you will be happy with this sweet tea.

For appetizers we got loaded fries and crawfish boudin eggrolls. The fries were truly loaded with cheese (they do the cheese pulls) and plenty of flavorful bacon. Also, they come with THE GOOD RANCH! If you are a ranch person, you already know. The ranch here is 👌 chef's kiss. The crawfish boudin eggrolls were so hot, crispy, and delicious. Just a very good, savory boudin flavor. Comes with a sweet chili sauce that is also good.

We got a burger and roast beef poboy for entrees. I am told the burger is 5/5 stars. I can only comment on the poboy, which is 6/5 stars. Sloppy, good, tender roast beef with a soft but crispy crust bread. I asked for cheese and roast beef gravy on the side of fries and they absolutely loaded it down with the stuff. So good, and so much food we ended up taking the rest home.

Everything here was fantastic, the vibe is good, our waitress was truly friendly and attentive, and the price was cheap for all the food and service we got.

Recommend this place for any of the dishes I listed, and I'm willing to bet the rest...

So it's Sunday and my wife and I are looking for some poboys. I like shrimp, and she likes roast beef. Most poboy places are closed on Sunday, it seems, but we stumbled across Nan's and saw the 4.6 star reviews and figured to give it a go... I'll start by saying I'm not one to be negative reviews as seen in my past reviews. When I arrived to pick up my order I was greeted by a few workers behind the bar. The place seemed nice, it had a good bit of people dining in, which is a great sign. I pay for our order and head on home. I ordered a 6" shrimp poboy, and my wife, the 6" roast beef. My poboy didn't even have enough shrimp to cover the bread. I had several bites with no shrimp. Ridiculous. At least line the bread so every bite has some shrimp. As far as taste goes, the few shrimp that I did have were fresh, so I'll give them credit where it's due. The bread, however, was like trying to bite into rope. Maybe that's just the kind of bread they use, but I'm from New Orleans and I've had countless poboys, and none with bread like that. The fries were just OK, nothing special here. At this time, there is a similar situation going on with my wife's poboy. Several bites of hers contained no roast beef. She says that the quality of the meat was OK, but bland. Maybe it was just a bad day for Nan's, maybe they don't care for the takeout crew as much, I'm not sure. But from our experience, I honestly can not say that this place...

Absolutely enjoyed the heck out of this restaurant. I had the Fried Artichoke Hearts….the marinara was amazing….I had already ordered when they brought these out….next time I will try the Spaghetti and Meatballs….the fried artichoke hearts were great, light batter not overwhelming the flavor of the artichokes….and I loved the crispy fried tips and leaves that had fallen off when cooking as well!!! I finished up with the Royal St. burger….slightly pink….between medium and medium well….and let me just say….the chef NAILED it….PERFECTLY!!! The Burger was incredible….juicy….great flavor….and seriously stacked!!! It normally comes with fries….but I’m a collard green eatin FOOL…..so I got the Collards….now understand….i grew up in the country….so we had Cafes and diners run by little elderly black ladies that knew how to cook Collard Greens….and these were right up there with them….most excellent!!!! If you haven’t stopped into this quaint restaurant on Florida right outside Mandeville….towards Lacombe….you need to do yourself a little favor and give them a try…..they have a HUGE menu….something...
