In response to your reply of my review: The problem lies that you still do not want to admit the cake was messed up and would rather go back and forth via email or reply to my review. It could have been resolved with a phone call. The sarcasm and petty responses is not a good look as this was the same tone in the emails so I am not surprised. But if you are going to charge custom design cake prices, the cake should look it. Also, if you do not want to communicate via text about cake design and prices. Maybe have a phone call or an in-person cake consultation.
Devour desserts Review
My overall experience with Devour Desserts has been positive over the years. The most recent was not a good experience and it was very disappointing. I ordered a baptism cake, custom design through Michelle, one of the establishment’s cake designers. We communicated via text and I gave her the design I wanted, she gave me the itemized prices and the total cost. I paid, all good. The total was $100.
Fast forward to the pick up day when we received the cake. The dollops were messy, all different sizes and forms, and they had holes in throughout them as if the piping had air bubbles. The flower on the side of the cake had holes and was sloppy as well, not clean. Whoever did the actual cake, ended the dollops up top rather than on the side. There’s a special tool to smooth a cake out that they should have used and either the icing was too thick or the piping tools were cheap because they should not have bubbles. If you look on their website, the pictures look way cleaner than the cake I paid for.
I texted the cake designer a few hours after pickup regarding the messiness. They did not respond so then I emailed a week plus later about the matter. I emailed about it and got a response from an unknown employee relaying a message that said, “ I was able to speak with owner as well as the head decorator. I am attaching a picture below of how the cake left our decorating room and we apologize that you were unhappy. We have gone ahead and issued you a 15.00 refund to original payment method. Again, we apply for the disappointment and hope your event went well! Have a great day!” They also had a picture attached of the cake in their establishment. (Which still showed my complaints).
I felt as though they look overlooked the fact that they had a messy presentation of a cake and blamed it on my disappointment. I emailed again clarifying that the $15 refund was for the mess up rather than my disappointment. The person emailing, who was neither the head cake designer or owner responded “I will pass along, have a great week!”.
I felt the sarcasm in their email, the back and forth in email with Michelle rather than a call from the owner, and the lack of accountability plus a cake that cost $100 that was poorly made is the reason I will never order from them again. Bad customer service and overpriced cakes. No one felt like “dealing” with this situation and it rubbed me...
Read moreWhile I have frequented the Mantua shop occasionally to purchase goodies for both family and work events, I needed to place a very special order for a cake for my granddaughter’s baptism. My daughter had twins – both a daughter and son. Sorrowfully, she lost her baby boy. My daughter requested a cake to celebrate her baby girl’s baptism, and also to memorialize and honor her son in a special way. I contacted Devour Desserts initially via their online ordering system. I followed up the next day to confirm receipt of the order and to review the special request. I ordered a cake in the shape of a cross, provided a picture of the type of cake, and the size needed. The order was to include my granddaughter’s name, a chocolate chip cake with buttercream icing with pink roses. The most special part of the order was to include the initials of my late grandson in blue icing as I would be adding a little blue butterfly next to the initials. I exchanged emails with Michelle from the Aston location where the cake would be made. I had also added a signature platter with a variety of the specialty desserts to my order. She confirmed my requests both verbally and via email, and I paid the $230 invoice. I followed up once again with the owner Misty and reviewed my special order and confirmed the date and time the order would be ready in the Mantua location. All was confirmed. Here were the issues with the order: Upon arriving at the Mantua location the morning of the baptism at the designated pick-up time, the signature platter had not been prepared. The store was busy with customers and we had to wait at least 20 minutes for the platter. Upon uncovering the cake at my daughter’s house after the baptism, to say we were upset is an understatement. My grandson’s initials were left off the cake – forgotten. It was a heartbreaking feeling for me – horribly upsetting for my daughter. We added the little blue butterfly which we had ready to put on the cake as a remembrance of what was supposed to be the twins’ baptism celebration. To top it off, after cutting and preparing to serve the cake, we saw the cake was plain vanilla – not the chocolate chip cake as ordered and confirmed. The next day, I called Devour and asked to speak to Misty. Misty returned my call and she knew already that the initials were omitted from the cake. I told her of all 3 issues with our order – the platter not ready, the cake order wrong, and most upsetting – the missing initials. Misty apologized but did not offer any refund of any sort. I received no follow-up communication. Very discouraging and unsatisfactory...
Read moreThis shop is adorable and the employees are very upbeat. It seemed to be a very popular shop because there were many customers in and out. We went for a chocolate tasting from Groupon and while the samples were absolutely delicious; the tasting wasn’t super organized. They hadn’t cleaned up from the previous sampling and were rushing to try to prepare for the next group. Though everyone was really polite, the tasting was mostly in between their other customers and ended being an hour and a half, not because we were learning about the products or engaged with learning about their company, but because they had to constantly stop and help customers. We would have appreciated at the table a laminated sheet of what possible tastings we were doing and descriptions of the samples since it does seem like they don’t really have time to spend to talk about the samples. Overall, the samples were delicious but it would have been more appreciated if we had an employee who was dedicated to the tasting since there was two groups, and was able to engage us in product information as well as information about the business, what makes them unique, etc because we ended up not buying anything because we just didn’t feel like we really knew the business at the end of the tasting which was unfortunate.
Edit: I already gave a 5 star review because the desserts really do deserve it. I am posting an edit because I really do appreciate when a company reaches out and acknowledges suggestions that could better an experience. I would love to go back some time to learn more about the company and get a better understanding of what makes them unique...
