It’s always a bonus when you discover the unexpected, like on a recent afternoon while passing through Marshall. I had ditched the van for my usual walkabout—think fitness and photography—and after I had photographed the amazing courthouse, I discovered Rüeggenbach Brewing on the south side of the square. I made note, and as soon as I had finished my tour, I wasted no time in repositioning said van. Rüeggenbach is the quintessential small-town brewery, a place where locals gather to enjoy the brewer’s art. It is unpretentious inside, and the conversation at the bar led me to believe that everyone knew everyone else—except me, of course. The beer list is short compared to many other craft breweries, but more than adequate. And, in a departure from my norm, I did not opt for the IPA, because it contains lactose, something I care not to consume. Still, milkshake IPAs are hugely popular, and I do not doubt for a minute it is a great one. Instead, I went with the Stagecoach Road (7$ ABV; 21 IBU), an amazingly tasty Märzen. I have had plenty of flat, tasteless Märzens before, but this was delightful. Were I to return to Marshall, I would down a couple of these for sure. I followed up with a taster of the Serenity Saison (5% ABV; 25 IBU), a farmhouse ale. I found it to be a little too effervescent for my tastes, so moved on to My Brother’s Beard, a robust brown ale (5% ABV; 23 IBU). I don’t drink many brown ales, but this was certainly among the best I have had. Had I not the need to make Dallas by dark, I would have stayed for another pint. Alas, I leave Rüeggenbach on my “Must Return” list.

A Hidden Gem on the Historic Square If you're in the mood for an unforgettable local brewery experience, this spot on the historic square is an absolute must-visit! From the moment you step inside, you'll be enchanted by the beautifully remodeled space that seamlessly blends vintage charm with modern style. Exposed brick, glass garage doors opening to the street, and a cozy yet spacious layout set the perfect vibe for enjoying a drink. Be sure to explore all the floors, and end your visit with stunning rooftop views of Marshall's picturesque downtown. The beer selection is exceptional, offering a range of craft brews to suit every palate—whether you're into smooth lagers or bold stouts. Some of my personal favorites are the 1841 Hefeweizen and the Dos Chupacabras. Plus, you can grab a can to go! But it’s not just the beer that makes this place stand out—the food is absolutely fantastic. The menu offers creative twists on classic pub fare, all expertly prepared. The Petty Betty burger is a standout, and the Texas Two Step looks downright mouthwatering. If you're in the area, make sure to stop by. Whether you're a beer enthusiast or a foodie (or both!), this local brewery is not to be missed!

Remember this is a brewery. The beer is good, the atmosphere is wonderful, and the food is limited. I gave them 5 stars because it is a great brewery! We visited as a group of 4 couples on their trivia night, we had a blast! (Make sure to show up exactly at 6) We ordered beer and some food. I had the protein platter and the brats were good, but the chicken was very sad. The rest of the table orders the charcuterie board (good except the pretzel, hard and unappetizing) as well as fries (extra points for having sweet potato fries). The fries were very good, both regular and sweet. I highly recommend this place, you have to see the roof at night.

The only reason I have a 1 star is because the food wasnt horrible. It was ok. Our server joseline was not experienced or capable of waiting our 15 person party. It was said we were her first group, then why wouldn’t you have someone training her?!?!?!! Our orders were totally screwed up. I myself got to wait 35 min to receive my (over priced) burger after everyone else had their food. They did after my complaint to take my burger off the bill. But then said they couldn’t cuz I still got my food. Then I said that was unacceptable and magically a manager said ok fine. It literally took us 45 min to an hour after all the other group left to check us out. And then I discovered they charged me for some of the other parties food items. My bill went from$186 to $168 to $122. I kept asking for a receipt and finally got one to verify the charges were finally correct. They did not refund me the difference but instead recharged my card. So for 3-5 business days I’ll be out about $400 total to this establishment. I don’t necessarily mind paying for great food and service but this place is overpriced in my opinion for the quality of food and service. We did have the “owner” come upstairs and talk to us but all he did was turn the blame back on us. We should’ve read the menu of the overpriced up charges for onion rings that the waitress encouraged. His words” I mean you could read it on the menu” $4.25 up charge for 4 onion rings is ridiculous. That’s when I had enough. And I told him to blame the customer was not professional. His words “ all is good, oh well” so my whole group said they would not be back and neither will we. It’s a shame cuz I could see where this place could be a asset to Marshall but unfortunately the owner is just chasing the dollar. No integrity as a professional businessman. My advice check those receipts and go somewhere else that appropriates...

Reuggenbach Brewery Co. - A Hidden Gem in East Texas

My wife and I stumbled upon Reuggenbach Brewery Co. in downtown Marshall, Texas, and we were absolutely blown away. We live in Longview and were passing through after a trip to the deer lease, looking to explore downtown Marshall. Everything else was closed, but this brewery was buzzing with activity, and we decided to check it out. What a fantastic surprise!

We had never heard of Reuggenbach before, but it turned out to be an incredible spot. The bar is impressive, with a wide variety of craft beers that are clearly made with care and expertise. The food menu exceeded our expectations—not just your average appetizers, but a great selection of options for a full meal as well. Everything we tried was delicious.

The atmosphere is one of the best parts. The brewery has multiple levels, including a cool second floor and a rooftop area that overlooks the downtown courtyard. We could just imagine how magical it must be during the holidays when the Christmas lights and the courthouse are lit up.

What makes this place even better is that it’s locally owned. The owners have clearly invested in the community, and it’s so refreshing to see a business like this thriving in East Texas. We love supporting local businesses, and Reuggenbach Brewery Co. is a shining example of why it’s so important to do so.

This place is a true gem for East Texas. We’re only 30 minutes away and can’t believe we didn’t know about it sooner. It’s a blessing to find a place like this with great beer, amazing food, and such a welcoming atmosphere. Five stars all the way—we’ll definitely be back!

Let me know if...
