First time trying this place today as we live locally and a huge BBQ fan. Starting off, we ordered online, process was quick and simple. Walked in 10 minutes later around lunch time and was greeted by a very nice young lady at the cash register. Great eye contact, smile and very polite. Another lady behind the counter making the food, both were quite busy, but one thing that stood out was there team work calling things out to one another, and helping one another complete the orders and it wasn't just on one person. Impressed by the communication and ability to work great together as a team under a busy hour. Now to the food..... The prices are average to the usual prices for BBQ food in the surrounding area, so they do keep there prices competitive with local businesses which is good. We got 2 of the 7oz Pulled Pork Sandwiches, both with the NC BBQ sauce, the meat was extremely flavorful and moist and pretty much fell apart in your mouth. The NC BBQ sauce was delicious, with a bit of heat and a nice hit of vinegar and spices, which really mixed well with the pork. The bun was soft and warm and fresh. We also got the Green Beans, which had a hint of heat but not much, some excellent flavors mixed in and also had a few small slices of potatoes in there. The potatoes were done perfectly, not mushy or overdone to cause them to fall apart, and well infused in the juices so it was a burst of flavor in your mouth when biting into it. We also got the Baked Beans which are a must for a BBQ. The Baked beans were delicious, mixed in a very savory sauce that was bursting with a good amount of flavor, with little sliced onions mixed into it. The coleslaw came with both of the Pulled Pork Sandwiches and it was a bit different then the usual we have around here, however it was very creamy and flavorful of which was well enjoyed. All in all this place was excellent, from the ordering process online, to the friendly and hard working staff that I encountered when entering the facility with fresh smiles on the faces, to the outstanding food that was bursting with flavors. Me and my wife highly recommend this place if you enjoy good BBQ food that makes your mouth water. We plan on coming back and trying more varieties of the food to continue updating this review. Well done and thank you for a great...
Read moreAfter a long day I really wanted some ribs. My normal spot was already closed so I decided to google search. I drove about 30mins for a huge let down. The ribs were extremely small even for baby back with little meat on the bones, and lacked flavor. They claim to have the best NC pulled pork, so I had to try and 🤢 what a disappointment. I overheard the young guy behind the counter tell another customer that if she got it cold it may be better to only reheat it once to avoid it drying out. I opted to get mines hot for that very reason. When I tell you it was dry I mean so dry that when I tried to add to it the meat literally sucked up the juices like sand in a desert. He told us the greens were canned so I opted for green beans bc he said there cooked for hours and they really put a lot of effort in them. Well I should’ve known they were also canned and unfortunately bland. The Mac and cheese taste boxed and had no flavor, like a jar or pouch cheese was used. A piece of chicken came with the pulled pork meal and that was the only thing that half way tasted ok, despite it looking like it’s been sitting for a while it was eatable. Oh and the potato wedges they were ok, but the chicken and potato wedges taste the same with added old grease flavor. I should’ve known better from the smell of old grease when walking in the establishment. You know the old grease smell that gets in your close and when you get in your car still smell it. When I got home my daughter said eww why you smell like old grease. Yea that smell! Grant it, they were closing in about an hour, but customers were still coming in and the phone was ringing too. But come on is that really an excuse;...
Read moreI had the time to check out Porkey's for the first time on the weekend after the glowing review came out in the Chesapeake(?) Magazine, and they were swamped. Nevertheless, the service was upbeat, friendly, and as efficient as possible under the very stressed circumstances. The food was AWESOME and I've been back 4-5 times since, despite it being about an hour round-trip from home in Annapolis.
I prefer Memphis-style BBQ in general (it's how I was raised), so some of the NC-style aspects aren't my cup of tea, but the sweet sauce is as good as it gets, the pulled pork and brisket are just right, and the rub on the ribs is heavenly. The coleslaw is perfectly calibrated as a BBQ sandwich-topper (less so as an independent side).
Sides are solid. My daughter is a connoisseur of all fried potato products, and we always have to get a large order of wedges (she even likes them cold later on!). The corn nuggets and beans are just what they should be. My wife says the cornbread is AMAZING, and she doesn't often like cornbread!
And then there's the cobbler. SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT! Just the right mix of sweet, salty, and caramelized/almost-burnt perfection. (and if you didn't save room it's OK, it re-heats well!).
Porkey's is the best all-around BBQ joint I've found in Maryland. They do the important stuff just right, and the rest is a really...
