Me and my family absolutely love Downtown Diner. We especially enjoy coming in on Sunday mornings for the breakfast buffet.
Now I will say, the ingredients aren’t premium grade but the food is still great. It’s an affordable, family-friendly restaurant where you can grab a simple order of biscuits and gravy with a coffee for less than $10.. and that’s the point, it’s good food and affordable enough to be able to come in everyday and get your usual before heading out for the day.
The diner is in the building where my great grandparents, Dwain and Beth Knowles, ran Knowles Cafeteria for years. It looks really nice and well kept for being such an old building.
The wait staff are all amazing. They’re always quick to the table to grab our drink order and constantly checking to make sure our drinks are filled and that we have everything we need. They remember us when we come in so they know that I use hot sauce, we prefer the flavored coffee creamers, and that our 1 year old son loves crackers.
Good food. Great service. If you’re looking for a quiet place to grab some breakfast or a coffee, try...
Read moreI used to be a very loyal customer of this restaurant until today. I order a chicken sandwich and it was so overcooked I couldn't chew it. I sent it back and got the same chicken back! So tough! I was late for work because it took them over 30 minutes to bring me my over cooked food so I told my waitress just to forget about it. She takes our check and says, I'll see what I can do about this...comes back and says the owner wont do anything and I have to pay for it! I was appalled! I asked to speak to him, but she says he told her he was too busy running a restaurant to come speak to his upset customer. Not once during our visit was I rude or demanding. I was forced to pay for garbage I didn't even eat. I don't know how he can even get away with it! He is the most rude, disrespectful person I have ever known. I wouldn't go back if someone paid me to. Customer service should be a priority, and his is about making that...
Read moreThis was my first visit here. I found it on a Google search, and looking at the menu online made my mouth water. When we walked in, we were greeted with a smile from the servers. Which to me is very important at any eating establishment. Our server was on the ball and took our order, and we received our food in a decent time. I had the fish and chips. I absolutely loved the fish and hand-made potato chips. The fish was seasoned and cooked to perfection. My chips were crunchy and salted perfectly. My husband ordered mushrooms, and to my surprise, I actually ate some myself, not my favorite appetizer, by the way. Overall, it was a great meal with stellar service at a decent price. If you are in Mattoon and hungry, do your tummy a favor and stop in here for a meal that will not...
