We are visiting from lower Michigan and were encouraged to visit “the New Mexican restaurant”, which we did after we found the place-and Newberry is not that big!! So that is the first issue-there is no signage anywhere on the building and if you didn’t know that it is in the same building as the coffee shop you would never find it. The windows need to be washed and there needs to be some welcoming decor at the door. We were seated promptly and asked what we would like to drink. I kind of wanted a good margarita but unfortunately they have not yet been awarded an alcohol license-as I said, unfortunately. I ordered a taco salad and my partner ordered carne asada. After about 10 minutes our dinner arrived. My salad was bland. The ground beef did not have any seasoning. There was rice on the bottom of the salad which was rather nice-black beans and olives would have been a nice addition. I do have to say the guac was superb. I had to add the salsa from the chips which were given when we sat down. That gave the salad a bit of flavor. Some more lettuce would have been nice too. The carne asada was a mess! The meat was over grilled and spicy. I ate a bite of the meat with the grilled peppers and onion. The overwhelming taste to me was one of dirt. I would not order it myself. They have only been open about 6 weeks and I wish them well. It would be great to return in a year and see some major...

Okay, I’ve worked in restaurants. I know the deal. I never send food back. But this chimichanga steak? It smelled like it had dreams once—and then gave up. One bite and my stomach filed a formal complaint. I politely asked for it to be taken off the table. Didn’t ask for it to be free, didn’t want a replacement. Just wanted it gone like a bad ex.
Our waitress? An angel. Total pro. But suddenly, the manager (or owner? restaurant dad?) appears. I say it’s no big deal. He proceeds to give me a TED Talk on “authentic Mexican cuisine.” Before I can blink, the cook rolls out like it’s WWE Smackdown: Kitchen Edition. Now I’m getting a joint performance on how real food is supposed to taste, while they aggressively serve me a “better” plate I didn’t ask for.
At this point, my family is silently losing it. It felt like I insulted their grandmother’s sacred tamale recipe and they weren’t going to let it go until I made amends—with my mouth.
For the record, the rest of the food was fantastic, and our waitress deserves a raise. But that whole experience? More intense than Thanksgiving at your nonna’s when you skip her stuffing. I’m traumatized, full, and...
Read moreMy family and I were trying to find a vegetarian friendly restaurant on the way to Marquette and something good enough to celebrate my parents anniversary. I looked on google and came across this restaurant but wasn’t sure how it would be since it only had 4.0 stars and a few reviews.
I didn’t at all expect how incredible this restaurant will be. I rarely leave reviews but I had to here - this restaurant deserves a MUCH higher rating. The foods is super affordable and the best mexican food my family has ever had. I have eaten mexican all over the country and in mexico and even my parents who eat it very rarely and we all agreed. The food was so fresh, delicious and huge portions. Starting with the salsa - incredible. The waitress and the owner checked in regularly and were so hospitable and kept anticipating our needs and were incredibly accommodating for dietary restrictions. For vegetarians, I highly recommend the burrito and the fajita. Churro was nice as well.
Definitely a must stop by and worth going out of...
