I wanted to see how my second visit went before writing this to give it some time and to not rush to judgement. So... VISIT ONE: We (2 of us) had dinner. Atmosphere was great, the decorations during Christmas are beautiful. The handcrafted floors are stunning. Overall, was a 10. We both were very pleased. HOWEVER, After dinner, I paid the tab, went to bar, and grabbed a drink to go sit by the beautiful fire place. After sitting there for roughly ten minutes and enjoying our glasses of wine, our waitress came up to me and asked if our meal was ok. I said "yes, thank you for asking." She then said rudely "I just couldn't tell by the tip, I thought something might have been wrong." I was extremely taken back because the nerve of her she to come and ask. For the record, I tipped 20% on the pre-tax amount. Her tone of voice was very off putting. So I said, "My apologies and handed her $20.00 more dollars and said I hope this helps" and she grabbed it and walked away immediately. I will never forget how rude she was. Hence the delay in returning.
SECOND VISIT: Tonight, mothers day. Again, two of us. We sat on the patio, weather was great. We actually ended up getting the same server. Not sure if she recognized me but I recognized her immediately. I was like oh great! Hope this goes well. So we order and she pleasant. Food comes I ordered the $45.00 filet which is what I usually get when going out to nicer places. The steak was just ok this time but the two sides were very cold. Cold enough it wasn't melting the butter pad even pushed in the potatoes. I asked the waitress if they could heat them up. She comes back 3-4 minutes later and said they made me two fresh sides. Ok great! They they were cold also, so not so great. So ended up not eating them at all. Cold green beans and mashed potatoes are not good cold for me. I then ask for the manager to come over and this is where I am not pleased. Her attitude to towards the table was less than pleasant. She acted like she wasn't happy to be there and I was an inconvenience to her for even speaking to us. She didn't ask, she told me she took $10.00 off my meal. Then offered my better half a free desert and never even asked me. Weird, I'm the one paying and I had the bad meal and yet you ask her for a dessert? I guess something must be wrong with me. I'm sorry but when you drop $150.00 or more for two people to eat at a "nice" restaurant I guess I expect the staff to not be rude or condescending. I haven't decided if I willing to go...
Read moreThis Equestrian-Themed Restaurant in the small village of Metamora is a gem for any travelers to the Troy/Detroit MI area.
Everyone in our party loved this exceptional experience of fine family dining. The owner's passion to keep some of the old building for scenic and historic value is evident. The food was fantastic. The diverse menu and drink selections for a restaurant in a quaint town were surprising. We enjoyed their homemade pickle appetizer with beer cheese bread while choosing our main courses. I recommend the Cesar salad, which accompanied my BBQ ribs with their own BBQ sauce.
To complete our meal, we had chocolate-chip cookies and coffee. To me, there were the freshest, yummiest cookies ever served to me in a restaurant. They were "just-right" warm from the oven and of generous size.
We enjoyed the ambiance and tried envisioning it as the general store or Inn/stagecoach stop that it once was. Linda Egeland and Victor Dzenowagis who purchased this 163+-year-old building have completed a stunning renovation that evokes memories of the stable horses that once rested there while guests dined. Thankfully, this building is home to this exceptional dining experience that honors the village history vs the tear-down tragedy that too many dear old buildings succumb to. The great care and thoroughness that is given to the building upkeep, comfort-food menu, and service makes this well worth the drive.
Everyone who admires horses will find the horse theme is well done. There are beautiful pieces of art, a horse fresco, and several interesting sculptures. To add to it, horse saddles and blankets seem to suggest that fond memories lurk every where. The sawed-off tree logs right in the floor when you come in are amazing. The main floor dining is set on a inlaid wood floor that takes the form of a tree, appealing to the beautiful countryside that it belongs to.
The restaurant can easily accommodate groups of various sizes. A large room is available upstairs. Seems ideal for birthday parties, bridal shower, family reunions, business events, etc.
The staff was friendly, helpful, and kept things moving right along.
Naturally, we were drawn to White Horse Inn general store across the street. However, it was closed at that time. Had I the chance, I might have bought the picnic basket. We walked around the village to see the local churches, storefronts, and...
Read moreIt was a joy to revisit this piece of history I once had the pleasure of cooking at from 1974-1977.
Needless to say the menu and quality of food are much in tune with todays fine ingedients, preperation methods and bountiful flavors. Far exceeding the standards of 40 + years ago.
The owners have done a marvelous job of blending the original and existing structure with a spectacular flare of modern rustic which gives a very warm and welcoming appeal as soon as you walk through the door.
The menu offers many specialized appetizers, entrees and wonderful house made sweats yet, not to many that it can overwhelm one.
A nice balance of fish/poultry/pork/and red meat (beef, buffalo loaf, venison chili). For salad lovers, you won't be disappointed by the selection and varieties available.
The price point is very fair considering the quality of the food, nice portions, fresh ingredients, and service, yet not to extreme for such as to many places offer up towards Metro Detroit.
I have certainly walked away from higher end establishments with what seems like far to many times with the quality, service or both for the price being charged. That most certainly was not the case on this visit.
We enjoyed appetizers of homemade sweet, zesty and crisp house pickles with a generous serving of beer batter fried bread. Also pre entree was a very bountiful serving of house Brussel Sprouts that were dusted nicely with Parmesan.
My wife selected the ribs which were outstanding and petfect fare from very high quality pork.
I settled for the Jambalaya which was loaded with seafood...lobster, shrimp, scallop and cajun sausage nice assortment of peppers tomatoes onions and creole seasoning with just the right amount of delayed kick. Dirty rice and warm crusty bread set the tone for this happy o'geezer. Not a drop was left and the large bowl was clean as a whistle.
Try to save room for the special house made deserts from scratch. You'll have plenty left for breakfast the next day
From clean and casual to shirt and tie, mid 20's to senior citizen...it was clear by the smiles and laughs by customers and the staff alike it is true what they say..."good food and good company are the keys to...
