3-Star Review for Chez Guyto (Haitian Restaurant)
I have mixed feelings about this location of Chez Guyto. Having been to another one of their spots before, I think I prefer the food there—but I have to give credit where it’s due: their rice is incredible. When they have it, that is.
The rice (Djon Djon) was fluffy, flavorful, and honestly the star of the meal—I couldn’t get enough of it. But here’s the issue: they don’t always have it available. As a tourist, if I only had one day to try this place based on its reputation, I’d be pretty disappointed if the dish I came for wasn’t even on the menu. Consistency matters!
The Tasso was baked instead of fried, which gave it a softer, slightly slimy texture that I wasn’t a huge fan of—but I’ll admit, it was still tasty and well-seasoned. The restaurant itself is small, so it can get crowded quickly, but that’s understandable since they’re a popular small business.
The service was great—the staff was super kind and even let me sample a few things I was unsure about. Very patient and welcoming! The location was a bit out of the way for me, but their signature pink hut with the two mannequins out front made it easy to spot.
Overall, a decent experience with some highs (that rice!!) and some lows (inconsistent menu, texture preferences). If they had the Djon Djon rice guaranteed, this would easily be 4 or 5 stars. Worth a try, but maybe call ahead to see if they’re serving what...
Read moreI've becoming for a while and their food has been amazing, normally it's a gentlemen that there and very friendly/helpful. But for the past couple days it's been a nightmare. I went by Friday around 430pm and waited about 20mins only to be told by a lady at the counter that there was no more meatballs, none were being cooked, NOTHING! If you're going to have a business open til 9pm, you need to have enough food to last the whole hours of operation, and not to mention that I waited all the time for nothing... I decide to give it another try, went by today, Monday and again, no meatballs, only 3 were present. None being made or being cooked. The only good thing was I didn't have to wait to be told no more, there was no line this time. That's it, I give up, time to find another local Haitian restaurant that will have food that they advertise to sell!!! No I'm sorry for the wait, or sorry we ran out, seems to be a common thing bc the young lady offered no apology.... was good while it lasted but not going to try for a...
Read moreChez Guyto is putting too much salt in the food. Guyto is very sweet to his customers. I like him very much. But, I don’t understand why he is not telling his cook to stop making such salty foods. The meat is so salty that it raises your blood pressure. Haitians have a high incidence of heart disease. A Haitian restaurant should be mindful of not adding so much salt to their foods to protect the lives of their customers.
Guyto, please tell your cook to cut down on the salt. Adding lots of garlic, thyme, cloves parsley and Lime juice will give plenty of flavor to the meal without the excess salt that can trigger elevated blood pressure and stroke. If you follow this advice , you will show that you care about the well-being of your Haitian compatriots and you will be my favorite...
