The Huckleberry — Restaurant in Montreat

The "Huck" as it is known is open after a major upgrade and renovation. It has been elevated to café status. Coffee is on par with your best franchises; the cold brew is possibly one of the best I have had.

The ice cream is to die for. Being from Florida, "the land of Publix, the Birthday Cake flavor tastes just like a cake from the popular grocery. Cold and satisfying.

For lunch, I had a vegan chicken sandwich, and it was awesome. You can build your own from bread choice to topings and sauces. An elevated "burger" for sure. The food was hot and served with a smile. I highly recommend a side of waffle fries, they are lightly seasoned (don't tell Chick-fil-A but the Huck's are better).

The staff here is one of the most caring groups I have ever served by. They are well trained, but the personable feeling is strong in the air. The Huckelberry makes you feel like family and holds so many found memories. I am so happy for them to have made this huge leap forward.

We only come here about once a year when we're attending a conference. Service is consistently slow and food orders are often incorrect. On our most recent visit, it took over half an hour to get our food -- and even then some was missing and two of the sandwiches were wrong. Ten more minutes passed and they gave our replacement order to another family (who were about to return it again when I said wait, let me check because maybe it's our food after all). The manager made no attempt to compensate for the nearly 45 minute wait. I think we'll look for another place to eat. There are plenty of choices in Black Mountain (not as convenient, but honestly probably faster to drive into...

My family and I have been coming to Montreat for the past 20+ years so have seen many versions of "The Huck" over the years. Because it was the ONLY think, I think there was not much motivation to upgrade the food and vibe of the place.

Well, fast-forward to November 2022 and the most recent upgrade is the best yet. When I was there, I noticed people meeting from the college and the conference center so it def feels like a third-space gathering space.

The staff was really helpful, the breakfast sandwich I has was legit, and my almond latte was delish.
