What do four female family members of Czech descent and healthy cooking equal? An AMAZING experience called the Four Green Cats Café! Fun fact: The “green” in the title is for healthy cooking, and the word “cat” in Czech slang translates to “pretty girl”.
Before going to an appointment in the area, I gave myself some time for coffee. A special shout out to the Facebook group, South Jersey Food Scene, for bringing this cafe to my attention.
From the parking, to the curb appeal, to stepping inside, I felt as though I left New Jersey for a moment.
The ambiance and decor reminded me of a European bed and breakfast - comfy and inviting. I was immediately greeted by a young woman behind the pastry display. After telling her this was my first visit, she gave me a little bit of background. The owner is from the Czech Republic. The recipes are from Czech and the flour is even imported from Czech. I immediately decided to splurge and order something made of flour!
I asked her what was the most popular menu item from the display, and I was told the donuts. I am not a huge donut fan, but the Bohemian one with the banana, cream, and chocolate drew me in. With that and a cup of coffee, I took my seat.
The donut was mouth-watering and hit the sweet spot perfectly without overdoing it. The coffee was very good, too.
I most definitely recommend you give it a try. This is on my list to come back when I can stay a bit longer and enjoy that feeling of being “away”...
Read moreChaotic when it's busy. Coffee and food were amazing. On a rainy Sunday, everyone made a beeline for Four Green Cats, as other nearby shops had mainly outdoor seating which was drenched. Sadly Four Green Cats isn't optimized for crowds. There's no queueing, order delivery system, or table service. Someone who came 30 minutes after us took our order instead and I ended up waiting an hour for my meal. Again, the staff was quite friendly and the owner was out and about, making sure people were cared for and happy...but they've been prominently featured in a number of TikTok videos and are a bit overwhelmed by their success. 😊 Come early to beat the crowd, and if not then come on a sunny day when outdoor seating is an option. UPDATE: Half as busy as last time, but still chaotic. Waited 20 min for a chicken sandwich, when it was already prepared sitting in the display case - they just forgot. 😅 Food still amazing, but they desperately need a better order delivery system. Someone's meatball soup has been sitting at the counter for nearly an hour. There's no table service - you pick up your orders at the counter. I expected better service today. Will update after a few more visits to see if things improve. I saw multiple other customers struggling with their orders. 😅 Owners are warm and mean well, so I hope things improve. Will still be back - even with the inconvenience it's worth the 30 min...

Four Green Cats Café is an absolute gem - a fabulous coffee shop specializing in Czech & European-inspired sweets and savories that are as delightful - unique. My Caramel Latte was perfectly craft, but my latte, amazing as it was, couldn’t compete with the star of the show: a freshly baked, hot-out-of-the-oven savory doughnut.
This isn’t your average savory doughnut. It’s a sweet and savory pastry stuffed with tangy sauerkraut, a slice of sausage, cherry tomato, a sweet pickle slice, and fresh greens. With every bite, my taste buds were intrigued and delighted. The balance of flavors had me wanting to lick my plate! I didn't : )
The café is cozy and inviting, and the “Cats” (slang for pretty girls and referring to the owner & her family) know their pastries! I managed to resist the German bread pudding and other indulgent sweets, they looked incredible !
Be sure to check out the café’s history online - there is a wonderful article worth reading. The owner and her family (Cats) have truly created a landmark that’s just slightly off the beaten path, both physically and in its distinctive cuisine.
SO WHY did I say it was worth the wait? During the hustling months, the line can be quite long, BUT don't let that deter you! The wait is worth it for both coffee and authentically created food. Don’t miss it—visit Four Green...
