The breakfast food was exactly what I was hoping for: a good, solid breakfast scramble. The breakfast menu has a good variety of all the food you want from a diner: eggs/bacon/hash browns, biscuits and gravy, etc.
The layout has you seated adjacent to the cooking area, right behind the griddle cooks at work, giving you an excellent view of the clean kitchen and efficient kitchen staff.
The only disappointment was the waitress. I'm not the kind that needs one of those persistently perky, happy, smiley, cheerful types to take my order, just some basic politeness and efficiency. Even a little friendly grief from a cheeky waitress is welcome. This one had all the charm of a railroad bull.
While seated in our booth waiting for our order I noticed an egg had rolled under the griddle and called out to the cook to bring it to his attention. This was clearly not something the waitress was going to allow, customers talking with the cook, so she comes over from the register asking what I wanted. When I pointed out the egg she said, "I'll let him know," in a manner that let me know that she had no intention of letting him know anything of the sort and that I should just shut up and wait for my food.
While we were waiting, a group of four folks looking to be in their 70's came in out of the heat looking pretty beat and sat down at the one recently vacated booth. The waitress put aside whatever she was doing, not to clear and wipe the table but rather to tell them that she didn't want them there until after she'd bussed the table. She told them to get up and go stand by the door until she was ready to seat them.
It felt like Nurse Ratched had decided to leave Salem State Hospital and take up waitressing at Penny's Diner. I briefly considered writing a note on the check suggesting she consider leaving waitressing to pursue a career as a correctional officer, but thought better of it when I realized that this sort of personality is exactly what we DON'T need in any law enforcement capacity.
By the way, when the cook handed our breakfasts to us over the counter I let him know about the egg hiding under the grill. He retrieved it (not quite hard cooked) then thanked me for pointing it out. Very pleasant.
I would definitely go back for the food, and not for the service but rather in...
Read moreSome friends and I went up to see the falls up there across the freeway, and when we were done we were very hungry and my friend said let's go over here to Penny's diner they had been there before, and oh cool neat little place to eat I was very impressed with the quality of food the atmosphere the people were very friendly just like the old days, and the prices were very affordable by today's standards I would drive up there to get out of this big frustrating town when it gets super hot to go to those falls to cool down and enjoy the beautiful scenery, and then to go across there freeway to get a bite to eat at a wonderful place to take you back in time I don't think you can pay any amount of money that can do that and walk away with a full stomach and leftovers for a very affordable price, let alone the friendly atmosphere the people working there was totally awesome experience!! I think people really should know about this place if they don't, great place if you're coming off of skiing or snowboarding tripped him out Shasta, or any traveling up and down the freeway so well worth the stop!! The three of us were very happy campers though we didn't stay over lol, it was quite a wonderful trip! Thank you so much for being there Penny's diner!!...
Read moreEmployees were very rude. Has a sign that says wait to be stated. You wait there to be looked at a few times before rudely being asked what do you want. After taking our food to go we discovered even more reasons to never go back. My sons chicken sandwich came with a pickle and no portion, of chicken. It had approx 7 a third of a chicken nugget size pieces on his sandwich. My husbands bacon burger had no tomato or lettuce on it only the unlisted pickle like the chicken sandwich. The hamburger also had something cooked into it (in photo) that we are unsure of what the unedidable item is. The sides were not an option but we were automatically given French fries and they were incredibly small size portions. The price of each meal was over 11 dollars. When we paid and asked if we could get a couple of ranches we were told they were 79 cents a piece we got 3 which should of totaled 2.37 but we were charged $ 2.55. When was tax added to a cold food item. Or when did you get charged for ranch at a restaurant when you ordered food? So bad food and rude service, will...
