Where do I begin? When I was first hired on with Janeās Landingās sister shop, Janeās on Main, I was promised āxā amount of hours. I never once reached that agreed upon number and instead experienced being scheduled for about 6-15 hours per week for the majority of my employment here. Lots of times Iād be told to not come in last minute, which cut down on my anticipated hours significantly; OR we wouldnāt even be provided with necessary supplies or ingredients to complete the jobs that were asked of us, which then cut our hours down also. I, unfortunately, have medical bills and a higher health insurance premium than most because of a chronic diseaseā¦which means that at times I was barely scraping by and under extreme financial strife (because of my lack of hours) and in turn very beholden to the owners personal schedule and her tendencies to cancel shifts last minute, flip flop, and sometimes ask me to come in at random times very last minute and at times much later in the day or even nighttimeā¦because I need to pay my bills and be able to afford the medicine that keeps me alive on a day to day basis! But also because I totally believed in the ownerās vision and wanted her business to succeed. So then, I decided that because I was unable to receive the hours I was promised Iād train on the barista side at Janeās Landing and also work there to help supplement constantly lost hours. I have absolutely loved and supported her vision since her doors opened. Iāve admired her creativity and what she did with Janeās. But after recent occurrences, I can no longer support her and her business. After every employee has experienced several bounced paychecks and being ghosted when we have asked if we can receive all of our paystubs from her (that we never once received with our hand written checks), and ultimately fired through a group text under false pretenses. (She claims all 5 of us āstole recipesā from her. And I'm guessing that was her reasoning in hopes that weād be denied unemployment) When everyone was sick with Covid, she even attempted to manipulate me into working with her while she was still testing positive on her day 2. (Citing ābut the CDC says that you can test positive for up to 90 days and Iām feeling loads betterā uh noā¦youāre testing positive because YOU ARE positive.) This is just a small portion of what I witnessed and experienced here, donāt even get me into the inappropriate and bizarre behaviors of her boyfriend who she now has working there. At times I was even supplying my own baking ingredients from home because she just wouldnāt go to the grocery store and provide items that had been on the grocery list for weeks. And in an effort to help with production and keep hours I would run home to bring in my own sugar/flour/vanilla etc. I wish the owner knew that her actions have not just messed with her dedicated employees time, money, and taxes. But their lives as well. Iām very much a small business supporter and I will do anything to not shop or support big box stores butā¦just donāt work here.
Sara: under statute KSA 44-320 (A)(D) you are required BY LAW to provide proper and legit paystub information to your employees once it is requested. I have documentation that I sent a written request to you on August 14th, 2024. AND my recorded phone conversation with Square payroll on September 2, 2024 informed me that if payroll was being completed properly, all paystubs are stored and available immediately to all employers.
Update: I received mine weeks after my request and they arenāt in square format nor accurate. Big surprise. The owner also keeps paying for reviews to be deleted. Iāll keep reposting mine for...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI was initially drawn to this coffee shop because of its cozy atmosphere and great coffee. But after the way the owner treated their employees, I can no longer support this place. It's incredibly disappointing to see a business that outwardly promotes community and care, while behind the scenes, they lie to and mistreat their staff.
Employees were constantly underpaid, dealing with bounced checks and nepotism. The way management handled the situation when some workers spoke out internally was nothing short of appalling ā rather than listening to their concerns, they retaliated with harsh measures and fired everyone.
Itās not just about bad coffee or poor service; this is about supporting a business that values its workers. I can no longer ignore the treatment of those who make my coffee or bring me my pastry. A company that betrays its employees will never earn my loyalty.
I will be taking my business elsewhere and encourage others to do the same until there is a serious change in how this place treats its team. The coffee might be good, but no beverage is worth the cost of...
