After hearing so many good things about their food and cozy atmosphere, my wife, my mom, and I decided to drive from Chicago to Brookdale Square to visit Shimla Peppers. Honestly, the food and ambiance lived up to the hype—the dishes were flavorful, and the space felt warm and inviting. We enjoyed our meal and were just about ready to call it a perfect lunch. But when the check arrived, things suddenly didn’t add up. The bill came to $95 for three people, even though the buffet was $24.99 per person. By my math, that should have been about $75 for the food, and maybe another $6 or so for Brookdale Square tax—so I expected the total to be around $81. At first, I thought there must have been a mistake, especially since we were only a party of three. Usually, the menu or receipt (and just common sense) says that automatic gratuities are only added for groups of six or more. It was even more frustrating that the surcharge was hidden behind their handheld POS (Point of Sale) device. I never saw a printed bill with the breakdown, so I tipped an extra $10 on top of the buffet price—completely unaware I was already being charged extra. When I brought this up to the manager, she was surprisingly dismissive and didn’t want to admit anything was wrong. She blamed the busy day, even though only one other group was in the restaurant. Rather than listening or trying to resolve the issue, she was curt and made me feel like I was the problem for even bringing it up. It was disappointing because up until that moment, we’d had a lovely experience—especially after making the trip from Chicago. I understand mistakes happen, but how they’re handled makes all the difference. If you decide to visit Shimla Peppers, I recommend double-checking your bill—and be prepared for some pushback if you question any “hidden” fees. The food is good, but the customer service, at least in my experience, needs serious improvement. The manager offered to refund $15, but with the surcharge and my extra tip, I was overcharged by closer to $25. Honestly, it’s fine—you can keep the tip. The trade-off is that we won’t return, and I won’t recommend Shimla Peppers to others. Instead, you’ve just earned a one-star review from me.

We were traveling from Philadelphia to Chicago and stumbled upon Shimla Pepper in Naperville — and what a delightful find! This place has now officially earned a permanent spot in all our future Chicago trips. We began our meal with a variety of appetizers: Katori Chaat, Gobi Manchurian, Haryali Paneer Tikka with Peppers, and Veg Hakka Noodles for the kids. Everything was incredibly flavorful, but the Gobi Manchurian and Paneer Tikka truly stood out — both were exceptionally delicious and perfectly prepared. For the main course, we enjoyed a rich and satisfying spread: Dal Makhni, Dal Tadka, Kadai Paneer, Paneer Butter Masala, and the amazing Malai Soya Chaap, all served with soft Rumali Roti. To go with it, we ordered a selection of breads — Lacha Paratha, Achari Naan, Chur Chur Naan, and Tandoori Roti — each fresh and flavorful. The Dal Tadka and Soya Chaap were especially memorable and packed with taste. We ended our feast with a mouth-watering dessert — Angoori Rabdi. It was beautifully presented and absolutely delicious — the perfect sweet finish to a fantastic meal. On top of the amazing food, the restaurant is beautifully decorated, offering a warm and inviting ambiance that made the dining experience even more enjoyable. The dishes with bell peppers are a must-try — they carry a unique flavor that lives up to the restaurant’s name, Shimla Pepper. Overall, this was finger-licking food that was worth every penny. Excellent service, elegant decor, great presentation, and unforgettable flavors — highly recommended for anyone in or visiting the Chicago area!

Shimla Peppers a really good pure vegetarian north Indian restaurant. We visited this place with friends on Sunday and they were able to accommodate us. One of the owners is always at the restaurant and they are making sure to provide you a good personal experience. The place is nice and clean and the inside decor reminds you of a restaurant in India. The service is good, but like other restaurants seem under staffed, hence the service could be slow. We tried various different entree and all were made in true North Indian (Delhi) style. Some of the items that stood out were: * Amritsari Kulcha Plate: it's punjabi style chole with kulcha and side of spiced onions. This was our favorite dish of the night and the quantity is sufficient for one person. * Karachi Paneer: it was soft and flavorful. We had it with lachcha paratha and Naan. * Spinach Kofta: this was the first time we had spinach Kofta anywhere. It was very good. If you plan to share then keep in mind that only 2 Koftas come in a single order. * Paneer Butter Masala: this was good and one of the few dishes that is not spicy. The restaurant also makes authentic romali roti, Delhi style, but unfortunately the day we went it was not on the menu. We definitely have to go back for that. Overall, a great family experience and if you are looking for Delhi style food then try this place.

We went there last week to celebrate our marriage anniversary. We have liked their catered food in past and wanted to experience again however at the restaurant. Our first impression as soon as we walked in was that there was no one available at the front desk to talk to get a table. Then shortly after , a young girl came to ask how many people we were & after we said the number, she just walked away in order to look for a table. Just to give positive feedback, we would’ve appreciated her communicating that she was going to find a table for us and we should wait. So we didn’t understand whether we should wait or not. We understood that she’s walking back-and-forth and she must be looking for a table for us. Then she came to call but looks like the staff members need proper training how to greet people. Environment was crowded, it is a small place compared to many other restaurants. We didn’t really mind that as long as the experience was good. Then we were seated . We asked for a highchair which we were provided with. Then no one came for at least 15 minutes. We had to call another worker to ask and then the girl helper came asking for the orders. She took the orders, seemed like a young girl coming directly from India who doesn’t know the culture here and Customer Service. But to mention, She didn’t use any wrong words it was more about not being welcoming. Now it was about another 15 minutes since we had ordered food so we had to call her again asking for papad and some water. Looks like it is a routine for them to get water bottles as soon as someone is seated however we were not provided with any. I just accepted that they’re busy. Then we were provided with water but no papad. Food was taking a long time to be prepared and my kids were hungry so we asked for papad again. There’s another gentleman who works there who was nice enough to bring us extra papad so my kids could start eating. Finally the food came which was nice and hot and we were hungry so we enjoyed the taste. No one comes to check on you if you need anything or everything is going OK until you call them when you need something. Then I later I realized that Lassi was missing from our order which was actually complementary with amritsari kunchala. The girl who is young enough and has no experience in customer service ex claimed that you have lassi on your table. Instead she could’ve asked about the lassi if we ordered separately. I informed her that I ordered lassi separately and the one which was complementary with my food never came . She did apologize but her body language was stern, and angrily she said that we are very busy in the kitchen . After we were done eating she came with the check and repeated the order making sure that everything was all right, and then offered to see the screen of order as well , that sounds rude to me although she was probably showing that she is being very good about her work. When we were leaving, there was no thank your smile and just a stare on our face that she gave. I also heard her complaining about other customer as well before we were seated. I feel that staff members need to be trained well specially about Customer Service and how they should behave professionally. We likely will never come back to...

This is Truly Indian Cuisine , note we are a older american couple, we just recently went to a vegaterian diet, and decided on this place, we walked in and were very pleased with the darkened atmosphere, mood light, and very nice indian music most people in there were Indian, and all the staff was from india. I say this because this is NOT fast food this is a very classy place with alot of heart, a genius idea to have water bottles instead of cups, i loved that, ((less dishes)). the server SriKanth was supurb, he was patient as we ordered and looked over the menu and was in no way pushy but suggestive.

the order : Tomato Soup: maybe the best me and wife ever has boasting with flavor. Hakka Noodles: noted the flavor and cilantro very similiar to chineese noodles or a little thicker than angel hair pasta in a indian sauce - again mouthwatering. Papro Chat. this was the apatizer and it with excellent with the chickpeas and crackers with that special darker sauce to spice it up in a different way. and the Paneer butter marsala ((garlic)) was Very spicy but I loved it... excellent flavor..

Prices: for this type of Restraunt all of this for 50.00 I would say well worth it. Ambiance: the music, we notice to make us feel at home they put some beautiful jazz on , little did they know i play saxophone.. perfect we know it was for us, because as we were leaving they immediately put back the indian music, believe it or not this shows much love and alot of class.

was their anything i didnt like? wee one thing any indian place i have been too usualy will give at least 1 sometimes 2 nunn with the marsala, that said none came with it, at 4.00 for one nunn I thought was a little price advantage.

in the end we were Very satisfied this is a most beautifull place with beautifull people everyone was friendly and you could see they welcomed us greatly... People check out shimla peppers it was 5 stars!!!

2nd time I have to drop to 4 stars we decided to eat light, and the server 3 times asked me to order more , even after i explained to him we are saving money. it wasnt the same experience annying music this time as well.. i love ethnic music but this was just bad,... we will go back and...

We hired this restaurant for two events--a bridal shower and an Indian wedding. Just to be clear, we also went through 4 food tastings with this restaurant to ensure that our menu was understood by all parties and everyone was on the same page. For the bridal shower, the food quality was not the quality served in the restaurant. I understand that food made in bulk will not have the same taste as that done in small portions but many of our dishes did not have enough pieces of chicken or paneer for the guests. We brought up this issue up and were told "not to worry" about the issue for the wedding. Naively, we believed the owner. For the wedding not only was he unprofessional with the hotel staff and coordinator teams but he also did not serve what was discussed on the menu nor how it was supposed to be setup. We for instance requested a live tava station and live chefs to cook for guests. He instead took the money for the chefs and decided to serve a buffet. He furthermore left within 1.5 hrs during this event which caused other people to have to clean up for him. The changes to the setup and food were also not discussed with us and we found out at the function that what we ordered and discussed many times was not done. We also ordered food based on the dietary restrictions of our guests and the restaurant owner decided he knew best and only provided one food option for those with restrictions. Finally, when we went to pay the bill, he did not take responsibility for his mistakes, argued that apparently the hotel (which took payment for each guest) and our RSVP list underestimated our guests and blamed others for his unprofessionalism. With as much planning and stress that goes into planning these events, you do not need the added stress of someone who does not respect nor recognize his mistakes and thinks he knows better than the person ordering and paying for said food. It was disappointing that my family had to deal with his unprofessional behavior during our wedding festivities instead of enjoying our own event. Hire him if you want for small event but be ware and I would surely not recommend this restaurant for big Indian weddings. The food quality is fine but not worth the headache...
