Rita's Italian Ice & Frozen Custard — Restaurant in New Braunfels

I grew up on the east coast in a small town that had a Rita's. It was always so delicious and just the perfect treat. I've lived in Texas for 15 years and every now and then I'd get a craving and see if Rita's had opened up here. Finally one did! Made the wife come with me and my goodness, it's not just nostalgia, it's just as delicious as it was all those years ago. I always go for the gelati with the ice and custard. The sweet ice that has the smoothest texture compared against rich bold creamy custard, if I lived closer I'd go every day. Plus as a kid, I only ever got one flavor but, now as an adult I can try their multitude of rotating flavors! Got to try the strawberry Colada, absolutely delicious. Plus this location was well kept with a friendly fast working staff. I wish them all the success so that hopefully they can open a closer location to SA and I'll frequent that one...

We sampled some of the Italian ice and it was delicious & refreshing! We had high hopes for the custard, but sadly it fell short. If you've had custard in the Midwest, odds are that any other custard won't compare. But for those that haven't, they may love this custard. It wasn't bad by any means just not what we were looking for. I would also suggest adjusting the price for the custard pints. $11+ is way too steep for what you get. The best custard at Kopps in WI sells it for $5.50. Something to consider. Service was decent. Everyone was friendly. Lots of on the job training going on, which can be expected. This location isn’t representative of other Rita’s. Pretty poor showing all the way around, except for the taste of the ice itself. Ordered a Gelati, but there was less than a spoonful of custard in the bottom of the cup, beneath a huge gap in the ice. Literally, less than a plastic spoonful. There wasn’t any on top as pictured on the menu. Seemed like they were trying to be frugal in an extreme sort of way. Service was strained, not quite friendly, and the cost was overly expensive. Definitely not worth paying for what we received (or didn’t…). Maybe one day corporate will pop in and do some training, until then, recommend checking out...
