My wife and I were in the area, so we figured we would stop at the 104 Diner for lunch. It was around 1 o'clock and, we figured we probably had missed most of the summer lunch hour rush. The restaurant was busy but not totally full. The waitress brought my wife’s hot tea and my iced tea. Soon, she took our orders. We sat and sipped our drinks and waited for our order. We waited and waited. We always try to be patient, but after over 30 minutes, we had to get up and ask about our order since we couldn’t get our waitress and were not being told anything. Eventually, we got our meals. The food was OK. My wifes cheese omelet was a good ratio of egg to filling. The home fries were seasoned well but the potatoes were lukewarm. My “diner cheese burger” was tasty and the fries were good.
My problem is, we were never even kept up with something as simple as “sorry for the delay, can I get you more tea”? In fact, we were never asked if we needed any refill's the entire time. I know it’s summer and things are more crowded but come on.... you’re serving quick high turnover diner food. over 30 minutes for an omelet and burger? No way! Even after we were served, our waitress pretty much kept away like if she just ignored us it would go away.
We live in the Laconia area and have gone to the 104 before, as well as other C’man stores. NEVER have I been so disappointed by the C’man in this case. It was like they really didn’t care. Horrible service and worse customer service.
We will not go to the 104 diner for quite some time. In fact will probably stay clear of other C’man stores for a while. We have a very good diner in Laconia (the union diner) that we will support as well as many other great...
Read more7/10 - food is good not amazing. I had the Tom's something sandwich, basically a Thanksgiving sandwich (sliced turkey breast, stuffing, and a cranberry mayonnaise) on sliced wheat bread and comes with chips. I usually go crazy over these sandwiches but the ones I'm familiar with and LOVE have the same ingredients except they add cheese and the mayo and cranberry sauce are individual ingredients so you get more of both.. For the side you can upgrade from the chips to their French fries for $1.50 more. That upgrade is worth it, their fries are my favorite kind, the ones that are like battered. I also had their 'poutine', this was my favorite dish on the table and was quite good. My brother got the seafood platter, a bunch of fried seafood. He said it was OK. My dad had salmon on a ceasar salad he said that was OK. Mom had some kind of breakfast for dinner and said it was good. For a drink I tried out their frappe. They've got a handful of flavors: vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry or some other fruit I forget, but lastly they've got a 'black and white' flavor, which is vanilla and chocolate. I'd never had a chocolate frappe so I went for that "black and white" option. However I was surprised that it was actually mixed up half vanilla and half chocolate frappes. I thought it would be like 1 layer of vanilla and 1 layer of chocolate. So I ended up with the frappe being a 50/50 mix of vanilla and chocolate. However surprising, it did taste good and was made the right way. Random note: they do not take...
Read moreThe 104 Diner is a part of the Common Man collection of restaurants and hospitality locations. It's motif is that of a 1950s diner with authentic patron seating. All that's missing is the tabletop jukeboxes my childhood diners were equipped with. I remember there was a diner just off the Route 1 bypass bridge in Kittery, ME with the tabletop jukeboxes. If this place had them allowing patrons to hear their selections throughout the place and equipped with electrical outlets and USB power ports, it would be a fantastic place to enjoy a meal. I didn't pay attention, but I don't recall the waitstaff in period clothes. This would be a nice touch to complete the look of the place. Although, I do remember our server placing a folded paper server's headgear on the table. A nice touch, but far from completing the look. As with other Common Man locations, mementos like comic books, older magazines, older artwork, older posters are available for sale along with Common Man merchandise. One thing not worked out is when the bill is presented. Currently, it is attached to a (replica) 45 rpm record with a small binder clip. While it looks close to the period of time place, I imagine they loose many clips over time. Securing a clip to the small record should make it easier for patrons and staff alike to manage the bill and payments easier. Or perhaps a weathered looking plastic pouch adhered to the record would simplify it all and be...
