January 2023 - It was nice to have breakfast here during a time when business was slow. It's very busy on the weekends to the point people are waiting to get a table. We enjoyed our two combination menu choices, one with a waffle, eggs over medium and sausage, and the other with home fries, toast, scrambled eggs and turkey sausage. Service was attentive and friendly. The breakfast favorites menu had unique choices, especially for those familiar with southeastern fare. Specials had something for just about everyone.
This diner has been open for more than a few years, first just as a breakfast place only open in the morning, then later adding lunch and expanding seating outdoors and a few extra hours into the afternoon. Eating here the first time this weekend, it was shocking to see how packed the restaurant was with customers! A larger room than expected, every booth and table was full. We had to wait for a place to be cleared and cleaned before we could be seated. Most people were eating breakfast - a lot of eggs and pancakes or waffles.
My partner and I came in at eleven but chose to switch to lunch looking at their afternoon specials. Soup or salad comes with lunch, so we tried one of each of the two soups offered, chicken with rice and New England clam chowder. Our waitress brought us two big bowls and oyster cracker packets. Both were good and nicely prepared, but I preferred the chicken with rice. Nice tender squares of chicken, carrots and the right amount of white rice in a well-seasoned chicken broth. The chowder had a good amount of clams and potato.
They have no appetizers on the menu, so we decided to share an order of curly fries while we waited for our main dishes. Really good. Crispy, curly and correctly salted.
The Short Rib special with mashed potato was flavorful, but as someone who cooks these really well, the rib could have been even more tender and the creamy sauce was different. The Chicken Marsala special I ordered to see how a diner would cook this dish in comparison to a restaurant. It had a small boneless chicken breast with the spinach side as more of a garnish, and a good scoop of mashed potatoes that I added salt and pepper to, but the Marsala sauce the Chef got just right.
Everything was good here, but I prefer the place up the road a bit in Barkhamsted I've reviewed on GM several times where everything is very good.
As for this diner: service is very friendly; casual interior with tables and booths; loud due to the volume of customers of every age; no alcohol beverages. The price of the two meals with coffee and fries was around $30. each with tax and tip. We brought half of our lunches home. Open seven days a week 6:00...
Read more(11/23/19 Update) Still no canned hash. Prices are still increased. This place use to be my favorite now it's just average and i feel embittered any time I eat here. The only good part of coming still is the wonderful and friendly staff. They're literally the best.
(1/25/19 UPDATE) So the new Hartford Diner is still my favorite place. However they've made some recent changes that I don't think are that great. First off, they've gotten rid of canned corn beef hash. They only offer homemade hash now. Now, the homemade hash is not bad, it's actually pretty good, but I still prefer the canned hash. To not offer the choice between the two is not acceptable in my opinion. Second, prices have gone up across the board. This isn't the end of the world but it still affects the dining experience after it being 5 stars the past 3 years. Omelets went up $1 from 7 to 8 and to add home fries went up from $0.99 to $2!!!. Hash meals went up $2. French toast is now the same price as pancakes at $3 for one, which just doesn't make any sense. The volume of a French toast is just so much lower compared to a pancake. Lastly, there have been small changes that bug me. No more green coffee mugs, no more place mats with ads. I just hope their success hasn't changed their heart of being a family friendly diner with great people, great prices, and great service.
In conclusion, their service is still amazing. The food still tastes delightful. But I really hope they bring canned hash back. I would love to see the old green mugs back as well. Finally, in my opinion, French toast needs to be cheaper, back to the original $2. Adding home fries to omeletes needs to return to only $0.99. Omelettes and home fries now cost $2 extra than before! If these things happen my review will return to 5 stars.
(OLD REVIEW) Best diner around. Easily the best food, best service and best price. I come here all the time and I'm never...
Read moreI’m going to try my best to average this to 3 stars. Mixed feelings about this place and my first time visiting. I read the reviews of others before I went and saw the 5 star reviews. So I drove a little further than normal to try something new
This is an average diner experience at best. Nothing fancy, probably the local community “safe choice”. At 10:30am the diner was about 2/3 full so this has to be the locals favorite hang out…as the food does not really warrant the drive to get here.
Italian omelette was served hot but tasteless. Home fries reminded me of Town and Country diner in Bloomfield. Almost identical. Not sure what reviewer (Hugo Ayala) means by quality of food..but this is average food that is priced at the high end of breakfast
Coffee tasted burnt so I’m confused why a previous review (Stephan Togher) would take it to go.
Bud Buckner’s review of “Not fancy” is correct but this does not rate where he has it.
The Diner is at the end of a strip mall currently for sale as it lost a grocery store.
The best part was the 3 waitresses that I met. All 3 very friendly to a new customer (thank you 😊) and they are the true stars of the diner.
But this has to be the best of what the local residents have who don’t drive to explore other opportunities in Avon, Simsbury, Granby, Southwick MA and the local residents give it 5 stars
My honest review is if you are already in the area or passing through on business…it’s an OK safe place to visit.
It’s not however the place to drive 18-20 miles from my house to eat at as there are other options for me at s lower price point with better tasting food.
Outdoor dining is available and plentiful if you wish...
