This is a classic New Orleans fried seafood joint that loads you down with some very large portions. Strangely (for me as a very carnivorous meat loving person and seafood addict) I think my favorite thing here is the mac 'n cheese. The seafood plate is huge and has a lot of stuff on it. The only downside (as with many fried things) is that many of the items end up tasting very similar. They have a pretty decent gumbo and I've generally enjoyed everything I've eaten here. Most people seem to need a "to go" box but I've always managed to eat enough of my food to have never needed one (so far). The one thing that I've had here that was very bad were the raw oysters and they were hands down the WORST raw oysters I've ever eaten anywhere in New Orleans (they tasted like they had been shucked days ago and had a texture like they had been sitting in a refrigerator for a long while).
This place always seems to have a really good crowd but I've never had to wait for a table. Service has always been quick and "old fashioned" New Orleans friendly (with lots of dawlin's and sweethearts from the servers). One of my friends, from Gulf Shore, AL especially loves this place because it is among the few in NOLA that actually serves sweet tea pre-made. They do close relatively early by New Orleans standards so plan accordingly.
My video review of Jack Dempsey's Restaurant is...
Read moreJack Dempsey has always been my favorite hidden gem in NOLA. However, on a recent visit, I definitely noticed a decline, especially with the service. Our waiter was very pregnant, so maybe that was why she wasn't really present, but she was never warm or friendly and just seemed aloof during our entire meal. We were celebrating my mom’s last day of chemo and she pretty much ruined our experience. She rushed us to make an order and up charged for everything, including a piece of extra toast for the oysters we ordered. In the past, we've also just been given an extra piece or two for bread (a dozen oysters comes with 4 small slices of bread by the way). She also never came by to refill drinks or offer any condiments with our seafood meal. We constantly had to ask someone else for things and the restaurant was nearly empty.
While the food is always pretty good, the chargrilled oysters were very underwhelming. They were just lightly steamed and seemed to just have butter poured on them, rather than being truly grilled. They're also pricer here than most places in the city, so I'd recommend skipping that dish here. The fried seafood platter is always fantastic though and didn't...
Read moreThe server was great she was very helpful in explaining the amount of food on the platter which allow us to make a decision about how many plates to order for 10 people. We started with 2 appetizers fried. Okra and onion rings Our our entrees were 2 seafood platterse enough to feed 2 people but we were able to serve 3 people on each one. The food was fried with the same batter for everything so it all tasted the same There wasn't much favor from the okra to the onion rings the seasoning was very bland but it did have alot of salt which took away that actual taste of each entree shrimp okra onion rings. I would have preferred each item be seasoned separate and then a different batter for the fish and shrimp I will not refer this restaurant in the future. We had to order water just to take away the after taste of the saltyNess My review is based on myself and others at the table Once we returned home 2 people fail sick the the stomach Jack Dempsey would've been disapproved of the outcome of the dishe's...
